The shop was following standard Allison service recomemndations, which apply to the 3000MH & 4000MH transmissions as well as most others using Transynd. Allison specifically allows for Fluid Analysis to override standard fluid change intervals - it is right on their website under fluid and filter recommendations. See 3000MH Service Interval
Specifically it says:
"Transmission protection and fluid change intervals can be optimized by the use of fluid analysis. Filters must be changed at or before recommended intervals."
Following the link, it further says:
"Allison Transmission offers an oil analysis program that will allow you to extend the life of your fluids to their maximum potential."

Note, when changing your TranSynd oil, Allison does not recommend pumping out the extra 10 quarts. 19 quarts drain, 29 quarts initial fill. I found this on the Allison website. Sorry I don't have the actual link here.

This discussion is mostly about replacing the fluid. No where did I recommend altering the filter replacement cycle.
The actual service manual says things a little differently than the statement on the web site above. It says to change the fluid at the recommended intervals as a minimum IF fluid analysis is not available. I included a link to a scan of service manual page in an earlier post.
My whole point of this discussion is on the public side Allison publishes very conservative maintenance requirements for the MH series, mostly due to moisture concerns from lack of use. If you drive your rig a 100 miles a week all year long and/or store out of the weather then the fluid analysis path versus just replacing fluid on time and miles makes the most sense and will save you money in the long run.

For BeaverJim, when you change just the filters Allison states that you will lose 2 quarts with the Main filter and 8 quarts with the Lube filter.
A question for Vicsyrd. In one of your last comments it seems that you stated that you believe the High Capacity filters require a 48 month change interval. The Allison chart shows that both the Gold and High Capacity filters are to be changed at 36 months.

Another question for Vicsryd. In the Allison documentation they refer to having Prognostics On or Off. Do you know if this is refering to fluid analysis? The documentation states that with Prognostics on the fluid change interval is 60 months. Also, when you received your fluid analysis did they include information that would help you interpret the ppm numbers in each category?

Prognostics is not a term that my Allison service shop brought up to me. The documentation I posted previously states that fluid analysis can be used in lieu of fluid change at the regular 36-48 month intervals.
In the port report I got back and posted at http://www.pacifier.com/~jcp/Allison_Result_web.jpg the color coding is the only interpretation there is. Per the serverity color scale if a value needs to be flagged then that box will have that color highlight around it. If a box on the report has no color highlight then it's considered "severity 0" which is the best you can have. You'll note on my report the only box with a color highlight (light blue = severity 1, normal) was Water Content.

Hi,all .Great info,Ijust changed fluids in my 2000 allison.This is the one for the ISB engine(5 speed) does anyone know if the large filter is around for it. I had a problem,just finding fluids and the reg, allison filter.Great site.

vicsryd, in your research did you find the parameters for determining acceptable levels for each of the components measured? Also, is anyone aware of, or familiar with any sort of trend analysis for a series of samples taken over time? Thank you.

Allison Service in Miami Florida
I called my local Allison repair facility and they want $455.00 for a fluid change and filter. Seems a bit high. Any recommendations out there?

The materials will cost about $200 for a MD3060. The rest is labor.
Or you can do it yourself in about 2 hours time. Just did mine with no pit or lift, no practice, and no disposal tank on site.

Can someone please clarify the part #'s for the newer high capacity filters for the MH 3000 w/ 4" sump? Since I've found there is a number of retailers that want to sell off their Gold filers, the numbers are confusing. Thankx.
