Motor oil in my 3000

I accidently added 2 quarts of 5W40 synthetic blend motor oil to my allison 3000. It was not driven or even started. I drained the pan fluid. Question: If I just refill with transend is it OK or do I need to change filters or does it need even further attention?

If it was me I would not worry. The tiny amount left will be diluted and besides that the actual difference between the two lubricants is small. That is just my opinion though. If you are worried you could fill it with the Transend then drain and refill.

It will be interesting to see if there are any experts here who can say with authority though.

Contact Tom Johnson at https://www.irv2.com/forums/f125/for...eer-89293.html. If anyone on any forum can tell you what you need to know, Tom's the MAN.

Excellent suggestion.

I agree with Kahoona. Don't see a need to consult an expert on this. If all you did was poor into fill tube....and you drained the pan before operation....no filter change would be necessary. Refill and drive on.

I agree with calling Tom.

I called them a few weeks ago because Tom hadn't posted in several months and I was a bit worried maybe something had happened to him.

He's fine, just hasn't been on the forum at all.

Let us know how this all comes out.

Hi all. thanks for the replies. The local diesel shop said drain, replace the filters, refill and go. Should be done this weekend. If I have further issues I will let you know.

A few years ago I bought an army surplus truck with an Allison 1545 transmission. Imagine my surprise to find it was full of motor oil and not transmission fluid. Turns out the Army ordered the whole fleet to be filled with motor oil to simplify supply. Anyway, a few changes and filters and the oil was gone. BTW the motor oil works just fine.

Exactly. A few years ago there was a major stink about hydraulically driven radiator fans. Older models used engine oil and newer a particular type hydraulic fluid. Turns out the change was for total performance out at the very ends of the envelope. Very very hot and very very cold. With the exception of seal compatibilities, differences are minor and just a bit of off spec stuff is no bother. That's why military vehicles use just about anything you can put into their tank. Not 100.000% performance, but close enough.
