Proper Shift Sequence

I have the typical shift pad for my 3000 series trans and I was once told:
When shifting from "D" to "R" to press "N" first. D-N-R and R-N-D
Is this a necessary procedure or can it be shifted from D-R while stopped?

Allison is pretty smart and wouldn't allow a damaging shift sequence.

If it was damaging, they wouldn't allow it.
