Shifter panel light intensity

When my headlights are on, the display light dims as it should but because the panel lies flat it is hard to see during the day with the light dimmed.

I want to disconnect the light input wire but cannot seem to find a schematic. I have the owners manual but it does not have a diagram.

I can sort it out with a voltmeter but would really like to have a schematic for my files and to simplify things.

Thanks

Usually the keypad illumination is regulated by the dashboard dimmer function. Try turning up the brightness of the dash lights, the keypad should also brighten.

Shifter panel light intensity

Hi,

Depending on the age of the transmission you have, all you would need to do is either remove or cut the dimmer wire input to the Shift selector.

I am assuming this is a world series Allison shifter.

If you have a single Red display on your shifter (WTECIII) you would need to remove or cut the wire in location V (gray wire most likely). This is the dimmer ground wire.

If you have two green displays (after about 2006 GEN IV) you would need to remove or cut wire in pin location 3 of the selector plug

Make sure you tape up any exposed wires after.

Let me know if this helps or if you have a different model.

Once you figure out which wire it is, I'd install a switch to restore the display to the dimmer's control if you're driving at night. A simple toggle switch under the dash would do it, just label or document the modification for the next owner.

Thanks for the suggestions. The light comes on with the ignition switch but is then dimmed when the headlights are on. Just two levels of light, bright and dim, so I am thinking it is a sense line that I would like to disconnect.

I have tried to find a schematic specifically for the Allison setup but have not found one yet,.

I am positive I can figure it out with a voltmeter but having a schematic for the current project and possible future issues would be nice.

I can send you a schematic if you need. What year is the transmission, or the vehicle? Or Alternatively, what does the shifter plug look like? is it rectangular or round?

Thanks Scotty. I have not removed the panel to look at any plugs. I put a picture of the outside of the panel in my first post.

My rv is a 2008.

Hi,

Sorry I didn't see the picture before. That picture suggests a WTEC III shifter which would have the round plug, however the age of your vehicle suggests it should have a GEN IV shifter with the rectangular plug. I have attached both, so when you pull it off you will have the correct one either way

Bingo, thanks Scotty. Exactly what I am looking for. Where did you get the schematic? I can go at it with confidence now.

I work for an Allison distributor down under.

Might pay to remember that without the dimmer connected, the display will be bright however the D,N,R, mode and arrow buttons wont light up at night.

Cheers

Thanks Scotty. I did a little digging today and found the square plug. The wire loom drops into the front run bay and I stopped at that time because I had other things to do. Are you positive that removing that input will remove the other displays?

I may have been a bit confusing there.

At night when you turn on your lights the shifter display dims and little LED's under each of the buttons light up so you can see what is on each button. If you remove the dimmer wire the display will remain bright, however the LED's under the buttons wont light up.

You could try this at night before disconnecting it and see what I mean.

It is usually pretty easy to take that wire out of the back of the plug, and if you are not happy with it just put it back in

Ok, you made me look. My trans keypad has two green LED displays for gear selected and gear attained. The other part of the pad has R-N-D and MODE-up arrow--down arrow, which are backlit in amber color.

Nothing is lit until key is turned on. Then when headlight switch is pulled, the green segments dim and the amber segments dim and get brighter with rotating the headlight switch, the same as the dash lights.

Since mine is also an '08, manufactured in May '07, I thought I would add how mine operates, for what it is worth.
