Dear new rver,
Alison has a lot of checks in their xmissions. I have triggered one or two over the years by some strange sequence of button pushing that confused the xmission. I simply set the parking break and select neutral than try my gear again.
If you don't have problems now it still might be to your best interest to bring it into the shop for a diagnostic readout look see.
Hope all is in your favor.
Rick

If you don't have one already , the Allison web site has a free download PDF file on trans operation and code retrieval and meanings.
" Shift Selector Operation & Code Manual "

Had a similar problem on our Country Coach and further problem that our Jake brake didn't work. Discovered THAT part on a 6% grade in Oregon. After much fooling around with TWO Allison transmission shops, we got the speed sensors replaced at the prompting of someone on this forum. We probably didn't need to replace all 6, but the cost of replacing them all was less than the cost of the labor to ascertain which of the 6 were bad! We also replaced our U joint (which we later found was seriously rusted) and then had no problem with it staying in drive or losing the jake brakes.

On, re-reading the download and your post , the info doesn't or may not apply.
Info is for 3000/4000 series trans and you've got a 1000.
I'll poke around the Allison site to see if there is another manual for the 1000 series.
