Transmission Locks out starting

I have a Freightliner chassis with a CAT engine and an Allison 3000MH transmission with a 4th Generation digital shifter. Starting in the morning and driving to a new destination it runs fine however if I stop along the road (to get gas or rest area) and turn the engine off it will not restart. The dashboard display says that there's a ECU Transmission data error and goes to a 25 second time out. The shifter display will show the cats eyes and the mode light will be light until a touch any key - then the display will go blank. Since it's blank I can't get any codes from the display. To recover I can only turn it off and wait a time period until it cools. When I finally do get it restarted and check for codes all I get is "d1 -- --" so I guess there is no code stored. Has anyone had a similar problem?
