Defective GMC Coolant Sensor

Just after passing 18,000 miles on our 2019 GMC Sierra 3500 HD DRW Duramax (and just past 3 years), I started getting a service warning that announced I have low coolant, and need to add coolant. Tried to add coolant, but found it was still full.

Turns out 2 different dealers seemed to know "there's a 99% chance this is caused by a bad coolant level sensor, which is built into the coolant overflow tank"...and you have to replace the entire tank assembly. Apparently this affects a couple of production years.

Sure wish they didn't add so many built-in obsolescence features....posting this in case anyone else encounters the same issue....

My dealer states the block heater parts are not yet available...GMC has apparently changed their minds twice about how to fix it...so far my solution is still working: I live in Calif, and it doesn't get cold enough to be fixing it yet

Going to see if my dealer will fix the coolant issue under one of the service contracts they sold me

Howdy!

My 2018 Druamax 3500 just recently had my block heater replaced for the second time it’s recalled. Shortly after that I started getting a “low coolant” warning on the dash gage. I took it back to the dealer and was advised that it would be $135.00 charge to check it out. Left he truck that morning and they called that after noon advised it was ready. Asked how much and they reply was “it’s on us no charge”. I’m now thinking it was the same problem Daddy RV had they just didn’t mention it.

Coolant overflow bottle was just replaced by dealer...for once I am glad I opted for extended coverage...one dealer didn't find the policy, but second one did, and it was fully covered...no charge.

This sensor seems to be affecting a lot of trucks.
