Some folks forget the Duramax engine has 2 thermostats inside the housing. On my '02, one was 180° 'stat, the other was 210°; the latter one was stuck shut.

Addendum: The Duramax overheating issue has been around ever since the LB7 engine. IMO the best solution information is found on the various Duramax forums.

Just this week my check engine light came on. While looking at the screen to see if it suggested anything, I noticed my temp guage was not up to temp. Sure enough; $500 later to replace both thermostats and problem solved.
