Silverado 4500 - coming soon

Hi, I have started to look at trucks for the usual reasons.

I saw that Chev will release a 4500 later this year and am starting to accumulate information on it to help make at least a semi informed choice.

Last weekend I stopped at a dealer and sat in a 3500 crew cab. The door is kind of short for me to get in / out due to much of my height is in my torso and decreasing flexibility.

If anyone finds some info on if the 4500 will use the same cab as the 3500, or any other info, that would be welcome.

Thanks

Harry

According to 2 news articles I have found, GM is stating that the entire trucks are new from the ground up, and borrow no parts from 2500/3500 trucks. Except the Duramax engine and Allison Transmission (350hp/700tq).

One of the major reasons for buying a Ford F-450 is the tighter turning radius over the F-350. But neither article I found mentions whether the new Chevy trucks have a different front end to compete with the Ford. My 2015 Chevy 3500HD 4WD needs the width of LA County to make a U-Turn (it seems).

The pictures I found online had the 4500/5500/6500 looking more like a commercial front end, not a "pickup" front end.

Which is disappointing to me also, as I would probably get a 4500 Duramax if it was more like the 3500.

Oh well.

That's because the new front end is a clamshell hood, the whole thing rotates forward for easier access for service. All information I have found so far indicates the 4500+ trucks are Chassis Cab only, so youll need to then send it off to an upfitter to finish the back end.

There was one place (perhaps GM authority ? ) that mentioned a 6 passenger cab. That would be a really nice feature.

I would probably do the upfit myself.

6 passenger most likely refers to a 3 person bench in both the front and rear passenger compartments...not a 6 door vehicle with 3 rows.

I've been trying most of this year to find information on these new GM MD trucks. It's hard to come by. I put myself on an email list to receive information when it comes available. I haven't reciecived anything yet. I'm really interested in one as my '05 has over 230,000 miles on it by now. The cab looks like it will be a bit taller than the pick-up cabs which is not what I want because I would want to be able to haul a TC on it. That was the same problem GM had with the earlier Kodiak/Topkick MD trucks; the cab was too tall for a TC.

I am thinking that a more likely camper scenario is something like an Indiana custom trucks sort of large sleeper.

The trucks are going to come in a variety of frame lengths before and after the rear wheel, so in theory a lot of flexibility there. Flat floors instead of dealing with PU bed dimensions.

In theory could have a camper / sleeper box on it and still pull a boat if the engine / trans can keep up.

It looks like the plan is to limit it to 350 hp / 750 ft-lbs of torque, so less than the current 3500.

Not sure if that is an issue or not. I want to climb hills at 70 mph. Hills such as the grapevine and Lake Tahoe / I80.

Media reports show the 4500 will start at $48K, but its the single cab with the shortest available frame length. Engines are de-rated on the commercial end for longevity. if your just moving a TC, the truck wont care as you wont be anywhere near its limits. Unless your "TC" is similar to a Overlander box.
