John: must ask why they put 10-30 in your rig? ISL9 takes between 23-24 quarts. Thanks

Rub it in

Had my oil changed at the local truck shop. They aired up all my tires including the spare. Then took it to the wash bay and washed it. It cost $71 but I supplied the 6 quarts of oil and filter, because they don't carry them. Yes I'm a gasser but had to rub in how much less it cost. My local big rig shop is happy to service me.

I understand and respect the desire to pay for a oil change. However, the concern of oil disposal is the easy part. Most places that sell the oil will also recycle the oil returned in the same containers, just use a felt tip marker and write "waste oil" on the container. Even Walmart, will accept recycle used oil.

I neglected to specify the grade of oil and just expected the 15W40. The facility manager claimed improved results with 10W30. They do a lot of trucks there so I let it go but next time will specify the grade.

The PM Pkg states 20 qts, however, the Servicing Technician reported 22 qts used which is good. The standard pan holds 20 qts and the filter I believe another ~ 4 qts and the "stick" say full.

Good questions.

John: just checked Cummins web site for oil requirements, 10-30 is allowed for the ISL in winter time or when temperatures are not above 70 degrees. Would hate to get into a warranty issue if you should have and engine failure if oil weight was not right. I assume your engine is and ISL? Thanks

I am going to pile on here and agree with ragoodspeed. But, since I have never been known for knowing much about much, I would talk to Cummins directly. Whatever they say would be what I would do. The last thing that I want to be accused of is not following directions....when the result might be very, very expensive.

So, I reached out to Cummins directly concerning the use of 10W30 engine oil instead of 15W40 engine oil. I explained where I live and where I do and plan to use our coach. I gave Cummins the specifics – that it’s a 2019 Renegade RV on a M2 106 chassis – they requested my engine serial number which I provided.

They told me that the ambient air temperature rating for my engine using the 10W30 oil is -10 to 130 degrees F. I asked if the 10W30 would have any effect on my engine warranty and they answered “none”. I asked if I should request 15W40 for my next oil change and they responded with whether I choose to use 10W30 or 15W40 was only a preference. I told them I would have the oil changed before driving far if they thought it recommended. They essentially reiterated; there was no advantage of using one viscosity oil over the other for my engine and use.

All that understood – my preference would be the 15W-40. I simply did not request the 15W40 oil, so the Service Center used what they felt was a good choice. I didn’t believe it was a significant concern for me over the next 4K to 5K miles before changing oil again and I was correct. However, next time I will be more specific before having the engine oil changed. But for now – I am good.

I appreciate the question and concerns regarding the oils. As a result, I have learned more along the way, which is what iRV2 is all about.

Seems what is written in the manuals and reality are two different things. First time I heard that 10w30 would be fine in your situation.

Went to grease my chassis and was concerned about the type of grease recommended for the u-joints. Manual says one thing, u-joint manufacturer says another.
