1995 DT466 Engine

I just got a 1995 International 4700 with DT466 engine and auto trans. I am not sure which model trans. I did a search and one result was the MT643 transmission. It is seems to rev high at 55-60mph at 2500 rpm's is that normal is possibly something amiss. Also it has hydraulic brakes (vs air), any issues with hydraulic brakes on MDT chassis? Also it has the older style rims and I assume hub bearings are they sufficient for current day use? This is my first MDT chassis and older mechanical engine (P pump) so trying to learn what I can.

RPM sounds about right, that truck was designed for hauling heavy loads over varying terrain. It was not designed for economy.

Sounds like you got a city truck. It probably has super deep axle gears for city use. Does the transmission lock up in high gear? If not, it's probably an AT545. If so, yes, likely an MT643. If you can get under the truck, there should be a data plate from Allison on the trans, with the model and serial number. (If Google can't decode it, any Allison shop should be able to.) There should also be a tag on the engine, with the engine number and power rating.

The good news is that the axles on these have dropout centersections, so a ratio swap is as close as the nearest big-truck junkyard. What ratio you want depends on tire size.

What size wheels does it have? They built the 4700 in a smaller and larger wheel size (19.5 and 22.5 inch I think). Overall good trucks, we owned perhaps a dozen 1990-99 International 4700 delivery trucks many with the DT466 at the family business over the years, in fact we still have an old one sitting around for sale. The most common issue we would have with them would be turbo bearing failures, that is if you don't count the odometer failing, which I think happened on every one we ever owned (would randomly fail to roll over in the thousands or tens of thousands range). The next most common failure point on the fleet of 1999 models we bought were failure of the air conditioner mounting bracket, this happened on at least 2 of the 5? 1999 models that we bought at the same time, and happened on one of them twice.
