8.3 cummins jake brake
So I have read that there is a kit 490A( pretty sure that's the kit) for installing a jake system to a 8.3. I believe the jake is from a ISL. Just wondering on the generation of isc does it work on? Will it work on a caps isc 2004 model year. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm under the impression that the 8.9 is the smallest Cummins that was available with either and exhaust brake or a compression brake .
Cummins never equipped the 8.3 with a compression brake.

Jake brake denotes Cummins exhaust brake. Are you meaning the Cummins engine brake by any chance?

Jake brake is a companies name, they build the original engine brakes and now build exhaust brakes as well. I don't think Cummins ever built their own engine brakes.

I'll question the portion of this post " and now builds exhaust brakes as well " .
My 99 3126B is equipped with a Jacobs exhaust brake , so they've been producing exhaust brakes for close to three decades that I know of.

And the battle continues...
"jake brake" in common usage refers to an engine compression release mechanism, such as that by the Jacobs company.
"Jake brake" is also a copyrighted name used by Jacobs company for their exhaust restriction valve mechanism also, as Roundup was once the only glyphosate herbicide, and is now a brand name for many herbicide formulations.
If you read the linked thread, the engine brake jake was from a similar generation ISL. My best guess is you'd have to compare the which other head and valve gear parts are common between your engine and the one with the jake available. The link did not show a kit, but a list of parts that included the 490A. Also, the other thread was not replacing a normal exhaust brake like you'd find on a 2004 ISC, but a variable turbo with a jake brake.

It won't work 2 different heads, because of 2 different style of injectors. Isc versus common rail.

And I was driving jake engine brakes in the early seventies, and I know that wasn't the earliest time they appeared.
The engine brake, often referred to as the Jacobs Engine Brake or Jake Brake, was first officially introduced in 1961. While the initial concept originated in 1931 with Clessie Cummins, the development and commercialization were later taken over by Jacobs Manufacturing in 1959. The first engine brake was installed on a Detroit Diesel Series 71 engine in 1962.
Exhaust brakes are a much cheaper alternative. The internet seems to say they were invented in 1961 by the same man. Lyle Cummins. When matched with vgt's the get some great braking horsepower figures. They do need maintenance though.

During the later years, Cummins did install an engine retarder brake on the ISC engine. One of the irv2.com members owns one.
