Bed design - off road vehicle carried at an angle

While at the 2013 HDT Rally, I saw that one of the members carried his Suzuki Samurai, at an angle (approximately 45 degrees), with the front of the Samurai facing the rear of his HDT cab. *He loaded and unloaded the Samurai with a winch.

I currently carry my Yamaha Rhino (about the same size as a Samurai) in the garage of our toy hauler. *If I could carry the Rhino on the back of the Volvo, then I would sell the toy hauler and buy a fifth wheel, without the garage. *There is so much more living space in a non-toy hauler trailer. *But before I make this move I need more information and/or comments. *I have searched on the forum and on the net to find more information (advantages and disadvantages) of such a bed design, *with no luck.

I'm just an outside observer on this so I only know what I see. Seems to me the only reason they ramp it up at the angle is to make it shorter. Now, there are more than a few rigs that are technically too long. I believe those guys just hope they don't get stopped for over length. And from what I've heard a stop and measure is quite rare. So, if you're wanting to keep the length down to avoid a possible problem then ramp it up. As far as figuring out the angle I think you would have to do some math and such for your particular veh.

The only harm I could imagine is if you started the engine while it was at such an angle. The oil would be at the front of the crankcase and might get foamed up. But, since he winches up and off the ramp, it's probably O.K. Many folks off road those little Suzukis and they get them into situations that are as steep as 45º so I don't think it's a problem.
