A friend from Florida said that Workhorse was telling the dealers there to put 15W40 oil in the 8.1L because of the heat in that area. Anyone know if this is for other southern states as well? Using 10W30 Mobil 1 now.

I am using 10W30 Mobil 1 right now and that's OK. If you or anyone else have any questions about 15W40 do not hesitate to call Workhorse Customer Service directly and get 1st hand information about this before considering using a 15W40 vis oil.
About "Heat" it gets much hotter in the south western USA down past Pheonix to Tuscon, AZ up around Needles, CA and then around Death Valley. 10W30 worked just fine for me.
regret the typo above - do not use 40 weight oil for any reason in an 8.1L engine

I have had very good results using Mobil 1 5W-40 Truck and SUV oil with the Mobil 1 M1-111 oil filter.

Your choice of oil filter is outstanding!

Workhorse does not recommend 10w40 because it can cause ring sticking.
5w30 is the recommended weight however if the temps stay above 0 F you can use 10w30.
They also state for heavy duty hot summer weather above 40 F there can be an advantage to using a straight-viscosity SAE 30.

There's nothing wrong with the 30W rating for the Vortec 8.1 engine. The heavier 40W rating isn't necessary, nor is it desired. If you are concerned about the heat breaking down your oil, then go with a better oil but keep it in the 30W range. I ran Mobil One 5W-30 in my Suncruiser/W20 and had great results. I used the 5W-30 rather than 10W-30 because the oil gets pretty thick up in our colder climates in winter. A synthetic oil will not break down as fast as dino oil when it gets hot and stressed and it gives you better protection overall for your engine.
