2002 Allegro Bay 8.1L w/Banks power

Just purchased with 57000 miles. Ran fine for 2 hrs, then service engine light came on, stated running rough and lacked power. Any thoughts?

Steve,
There is a specific forum down the main page for Workhorse chassis. You might try a search there.

If your check engine light is on, chances there will be a fault code. You can buy inexpensive OBD II code readers, or you can drive to an auto parts store where they will probably be able to read the code for you.

When that happened to our 8.1, there was also a notice on the dash readout that said "Reduced Power Mode." Our problem was a bad throttle body. There is no mechanical linkage between the gas pedal and the throttle - it's all electronic. After sitting 10 or 15 minutes, the code cleared and the engine ran fine for a few more miles before going into reduced power mode again. We were able to limp to a Workhorse service center.

Welcome to irv2. We have a Workhorse section here. I'll move this thread over there to get a broader response.

Do that. You can get a code scanner these days for around $50 or under. I bought a real cheap one for around $20 on the internet that connects to my laptop via USB and works perfectly. I just had to wait a week or so for it.

In any case, that will give you a lot better information than us taking stabs at it based on that limited info.

You can get a WORM pack from Brazel's RV Performance Center. Plug it into your OBDII port and follow the instructions. Mail it back. If there are any detectable DTCs, the pack will store the code and someone from the shop will call you.

Consider installing "Ultrapower" ECM programming on top of the Banks equipment to optimize the investment in the currently installed equipment.

A TechII is the only code scanner that is nearly 100% accurate. All GM dealerships and WASCs use the TechII and they cost way more than $50.00. Although an inexpensive code scanner will often return a DTC only the Tech II can examine the entire calibration stack for problems.
