2003 8.1 Engine Failure
It was running hot but running ok. I think root cause was a belt coming apart and possibly cracking a fan blade but Didn,t see it untill a picece of blade exited. So I bbroke off some blade on opposite blade and kept on going. Oh well topping hill at Mile 305 on I 40 near Lenoir City Tenn.was its final breath. It quit , restared for maybe 2 secs. died again and failed to turn over. 4 hours later tow arrived. We tried again and it sounded just like a hammer beating on a anvil down deep in block. Oh well est. cost of Jasper repl. 16,000$ when one is available. 2200 miles from home.

Do you have a temperature gauge that gives the actual temp or just a needle on a scale type gauge? I'm just curious...How many miles on engine?
Don't limit yourself to just Jasper. I would start searching engines on my own and not necessarily depend on a shop to get one.

I would recommend staying away from Jasper…we had so many issues, as well as other dealers we’ve talked to, with their 8.1L rebuilds. I’ve heard good things about Blackwater Engines.

The issue is the lack of internal repair parts. If a big reman is lacking parts to complete a unit how can anyone else get the items that MAY be needed?. Besides we were a long way from home and even to find a shop that would take the unit was none existent. I went with Jasper because of there reputation. Its not like I was 50 miles from home. The worst part is that Backorder or ETA are non existent. Your simply on the list at Reman with 1/2 down and don,t call us we will deliver WHEN.

Might be a longshot but I would check with GM dealerships that sell rebuilt engines. They have a network to source GM engines. You might be surprised what's sitting around in a warehouse somewhere.

As odd as this may sound a serious look into a 454 or 502 may well be in order here. 8.1 were limited production, parts can be difficult to find. In the near future they may well be impossible. There is some very serious supply chain problems happening as we speak.

When I ran my machine shop until i sold out last fall I did business with Jasper and ATK which if I remember correctly was out of Texas. I only ever had one engine with a problem from Jasper. They warrantied the whole job covering parts and labor generously and I did the repair in my own repair shop which was in the same facility as my machine shop. I should also add the issue was a part failure, not the fault of Jasper.
Engine parts were getting scarce to find even last fall. I tried to order camshafts from every supplier out there and they were nearly non existent. Crane cams told me all the cams they sell come as blanks from China and they do the grinding to specs in house. I was told at that time they were over a year out even if they had the blanks on the shelf that day, and all I needed was a performance camshaft for a Chevrolet truck 6.0 engine.
The same went for pistons. Nearly extinct for even the most popular engines. Race engine parts were nearly impossible to get in a timely fashion if at all.
I shied away from reman engines from the car manufacturers. They do or did no rebuilds in house. They sublet the rebuilding out to various vendors so they really don't have any actual quality control themselves. If it works fine, if not we will source you another. After getting stung twice I walked away.

What is the differences from first to last year of manufacture. Is there really a difference between say the kodiak or pickup or the rv engines. Where was this motor manufactured? Is there a upgraded engine that replaces the 8.1? GM or WCC is completely out of the class A chassis business.

The 8.1L was made by GM at the N. Tonawanda, NY engine plant. It was one of the casualties of GM taking Government bailout $$$. The loss of this engine availablity was a key factor in the demise of WCC.
I doubt there is much difference in these motors used in many GM products, including their medium duty truck lines.

16K for a gas motor is WAY to much labor/ parts! If they said 10,000 , thats still expensive!
3 days shop time maybe 4 if its a hard job , small mark up on the motor and small parts your just under $10,000

Ouch bummer...
At 16K the rig isn't likely worth 16K. And with no definitive ETA on getting an engine combined with 2200 miles from home you may have to consider....
Cutting it and moving on.

YES. Not to long after the 8.1L was discontinued by GM another company was claiming their "new" engine could be configured as a direct replacement for the 8.1L that WCC used.
A year or two after the demise of WCC, I believe it was Spartan that did a PR saying they were going to use this "new motor" in an RV chassis. However, I remember THAT announcement was later said to have been deemed "premature". I don't believe any RV chassis maker ever used it, and that MAY have been due to the cost of getting "on-highway" emissions certification from the EPA.
All that said, here is a link to the company that makes it:
