2003 w22 fuel filter- retro fit 2004 3 port? Can it be done

Since vapor lock is an issue. Does it make sense to install the 3 port filter to help direct cool fuel back to the tank along with the hot fuel coming from the rail?

I see other options are to punch holes on the base of the fuel pump, insulate all fuel lines

If so how should I run the filter and gas lines.

What about installing an additional filter closer to the engine, have the hot rail fuel come back to that inline filter back into the engine. Bypass the gas tank completely?

Fuel volume is your friend to help with possible vapor lock problem in pre 2004 models of Workhorse 8.1 engines. Try to avoid letting the fuel tank get much below half full.
Never had a vapor lock in my 2004 motorhome on a 2003 chassis in 73k.
Less painful at the gas pump also!

There was an adapter kit sold to retrofit the fuel filter on coaches like yours.

Can you tell me if the adapter kit matched this?

https://www.workhorseparts.com/W8006...lter-W-Adapter

If so I understand the concept.

Would I just splice into the return line, at the filter location, (T into the return line with a new T fitting)
connect the T from the fuel filter/adapter to this new T in the return?

Allowing fuel from the fuel filter to route back into the return line near the filter location? Should the adapter be placed before the filter or after?

Would compression fittings work?

It sounds like this is the easiest and best way to avoid the issue. I have had a lot of people tell me keep it simple stupid concerning this potential issue.

May I ask, have you insulated the fuel lines along the frame rail, above the exhaust? Are you running the true dual exhaust or single exhaust passenger side option?

Being in Texas myself, have you seen any issues running on 90+ degree weather?

This kit is for using the less expensive early fuel filter that was used prior to 2004, for the more expensive fuel filter found on later Workhorse models. It is not intended for what you propose.

What would I use on my 2004 W24? I thought that was the kit I needed. I got it from Ultra RV and I sent them my SN and that is what they sent me.

If your 2004 W24 has the dual outlet filter, this kit will adapt the earlier and less expensive single outlet filter to fit your needs. It converts the earlier model filter from a single outlet to dual outlet. Dual outlet filtersaresometimeshard to find, and are expensive!

If I have a 2003 old style dual outlet filter and want to convert to the 3 port filter is it as straightforward as cutting the return line, at the filter location, T into that line and run the 3rd outlet into the T, thus bringing cool fuel back into the tank along with the hot return fuel from the engine?

Any particular ways you suggest doing this?

I understand what you are trying to do, however late models that use the 3 fitting filter have different fuel pressure regulation than the earlier models, as well as different fuel return system. Don’t know for sure, but would think you would have a lack of fuel pressure and quantity going to the engine if you plumbed in the filter the way you stated. You could do a temporary hook up and give it a try.

The engine fuel rails are different.

IO,
The '03 and '04 fuel systems are completely different.
The '03 uses a fuel pressure regulator up front on the fuel rail.
The '04 uses a back pressure regulator as part of the in-tank pump.
My '04 PA has the later system, and it requires about 60 PSI at the Schrader valve on the fuel rail to run properly.

If you are getting a vapor lock, the first thing I would do is insulate the fuel line where there is a source of heat. The least expensive alternative.
If that does not work, you might consider re-routing the fuel line.

Thanks for all the info here and all your replies.

Shout out to Ed!!!- IYKYK

I have been struggling with this issue prior to departing on a trip and has helped set my path.

Recap for my 2003 2 port fuel filter conversion to 3 port-

Fuel pressure and routing is a little different in the earlier models (-2003) so adding a re route to the fuel lines may cause more issues

Keeping everything the same- insulating the fuel lines, keeping the tank half full, ensuring any recall issues are completed- best way to go as of now.

I have replaced the fuel pump from Brazel and was curious if the replacement pump was re engineering to help the hot fuel dumping directly back on top of the pump. Still need to call and ask the question.

This may also be the fix. Thanks again for all the help.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN
