2004 W22 trailer wiring & advice

Hi all -

I'm the proud recipient of a 2004 Adventurer with a W22 chassis, 47,500 miles - my parents bought it new, and I'm going through it and getting it serviced, bugs out, and back on the road. Unfortunately I have limited service records on it, so I'm starting from scratch so I have a starting point.

I've got a Wells Cargo 20' trailer that carries 2 road bikes and miscellaneous stuff - the total weight is maybe 4,000 lbs max. The MH has a hitch but no electrical connector or brake controller. I've searched all over for instructions or wiring kits, with no luck.

So, a couple of questions:

1) What's the best way to add electrical connectors and brake controllers to the 2003/2004 chassis?

2) The MH has no power upgrades (Banks or UP) - any recommendations for down the road a bit on where to start?

Thanks in advance -

- Clay

I don't know if WH provides trailer wiring or if Winni would do this. In my case I already had a trailer plug. The Winnebago forum may give you more answers to this question but if it doesn't I'll give it a shot.

I would start by looking for a small bundle of wires near the receiver hitch. It should contain dark green(rt turn and brake), yellow(left turn and brake) brown(running lights), and white(ground). It may also contain Light green(reverse light) and light blue(reverse light only).

If you haven't purchased a brake controller I would get any made by Tekonsha. I prefer the Prodigy or the P3. Use the enclosed instructions. If you need verbal advice, Tekonsha's tech line is usually easy to get and great to talk to.

For your 2nd, question I can't help. I seem to have plenty of power in my 33' MH. So, until I want a power upgrade I don't need one. I think most on this forum will push the U.P.

Thanks Scott -

I've had good luck with Tekonshas on trucks as well -

As soon as it warms up (it was zero last night, got up to 25 today) and the snow stops blowing, I'll see what I can find!

I drove the coach from Savannah here to Wyoming last spring - it was pretty good until I started hitting the Nebraska and Wyoming winds, and of course power with no turbo drops with altitude so I'm about 20% shy of sea level power here - not a huge deal but a lot of my camping's in the mountains up to 10,000'. It'll be interesting to see whether the coach will fit in the campgrounds!

i am using a K&N panel air filter part #33-2062-1 and a BANKS ecm upgrade with good results. i am using AMSOIL synthetic fluids in the engine, transmission, and power steering. i am gong to install AMSOIL coolant and AERO low restriction mufflers soon.
look far up under the rear of the coach for a connector taped to the wiring harness. thats where i found my 6 pin connector.
i had to run a 14 gauge wire from the rear 6 pin connector to the front dash board where i installed a DEXTER inertial electric brake controller. i went with the dexter controller because dexter also made the axle and brakes on my tow dolly.
whichever controller you buy, follow the directions for installation and you should be ok. follow the color code in the controller installation instructions.
wally world and most auto parts stores sell connectors.
u-haul has connectors and installation service at some of their locations.

added info: The 6 pin connector was totally hidden and covered with Black electrical tape on my moho.
