Brings back memories of pulling a 454 out of my friends dads side door Winnebago THREE times until we solved the problem. It kept eating the crankshaft thrust washers on the backside. Turned out someone installed an undersized fitting on the transmission cooler, hydraulically pushing the torque converter forward at all times. Apparently the oil pump relief couldn't overcome a 1/8" brass fitting. BTW, this was an unaltered unit and Winnebago knew about the issue in the late 80's. It wasn't until the 2nd crank kit we installed that Harvey finally raised enough hell with Winnebago they sent him a very quiet copy of an internal service bulletin.

Very interesting about the crankshaft. I had a '78 Chevy #/4 ton 4WD with a small block 400. Worst pickup I ever had. I put two cranks in that engine as it was doing the same thing. The thin thrust on the back would get all chewed up but the bearings always looked like new. No one could tell me why but it was evident there was too much thrust pushing on the crank. Now it all makes sense. After the third one I swapped it out for a used 454 and that is a completely 'nother story.

Three years ago, when I was shopping for my current motorhome, I saw one advertised where the owner had just had the motor replaced. It was done at a Chevrolet dealer in Phoenix-- certainly not the cheapest place to have work done-- and the seller had posted a copy of the Invoice from the dealer showing it cost $18-19k.

I'm embarassed to say, $14,000. Burt Chevrolet, now John Elway Chevrolet.

Gouged me. The service writer said we have to take the whole bottom of the chassis off to get it out even though I told him it had a drivers door.

When they got the engine, the only good thing about the shop was that they let me go back and watch. I felt the mechanics were good. I suggested to him to take it out the drivers door and he said "Hmmm, we might be able to do that; and they did.

However they refused to reduce the price they quoted me.

Another thing, when I towed the MH to this shop, it actually would run but sounded terrible. The writer came out when the tow truck got it there and with me in it with him, he started it up for about 2 seconds and shut it off quick. However, when they went to take it in the shop, instead of towing it, they decided to drive it about 300 yards into the shop. Before they got it in the garage , the rod came out the side of the block, ruining the starter and
destroyed the block so I could not even get a a core charge reduced.

It was a terrible experience. Then the Ac wouldnt work because they didnt hook up a vacuum line or something. And the slidepout wouldnt work and had to get a mobil repairman to find they disconnected a solenoid that was connected to the parking brake to make the SO work.

2 other places told me they would do it for 10 to 12 K tops. However they were both about 75 miles in opposite direction from the MH. I would have had to tow the MH there at my expense, and then there was no guarantee they would not say , "Oh, we didnt realize this or whatever"

The MH at this time was 5 yrs old and only had 24,000 miles. I kept it for 5 more years and sold it with 48,000 miles.

Oh I forgot, Merry Christmas every one
