99 P32 alternator?

Went and started the moho yesterday, and after about a half an hour of running, it died. So I go to restart it and the battery is almost dead. Threw the battery charger on it and starting looking around. Cleaning grounds and posts and battery terminals .

Once the battery is recharged I start it, and watch voltage drop. Figure it's an alt problem. My charger has an alt tester (how reliable I dont know), and it says there is an issue with the alt.

Question is how do I even get to the alternator to change it. Looks like it is more than an arm length from the hood and from the doghouse. Also need to figure out what alternator to buy to replace this one.

The doghouse has to be unbolted from the floor , which should give you more access to the alternator. You could check the voltage on the large stud of the alternator to confirm it's not a wiring problem. You should have battery voltage there. The voltage should go up to around 14v when the engine is started if the alternator is working. You should have a CS130 or CS140 alternator ranging from 100 to 180 amps. The info is stamped into the alternator normally in a place you can't see till it's removed.

Also, remember to disconnect battery first, or tape up the big wire eye connector after removing from alt...

Thanks for the help, I've changed half a dozen alternators over the years and never had an issue. It's just buried in there so deep, but looks like I should be able to reach it through the passenger side wheel well. So hopefully wont be too bad. Figure while I'm in there maybe I'll replace the belt at the same time and keep the old 1 for emergency

I also have a '99 P-30 chassis and think you will have difficulty removing the alternator from below. It's not that hard to remove the doghouse where you will need to release tension on the spring loaded idler pulley to remove the serpentine belt. There is a 3/8 in. square hole in the bracket that will accept a 3/8 in. drive breaker bar and pushing with this moves the pulley, creating slack to remove the belt. The alternator has a tension bracket and bolt on the upper side and a through bolt where it attaches to the engine. Again, more easily accessed from above. I put a shop mat on top of the engine so I can lay on this without getting poked by various engine parts

Also, the serpentine belt has a circuitous path, so check the routing around the various pulleys.

I chanced mine last year on my 8.1L P32 chassis coach, which should be very similar to yours, was easy to do from the top, pull the dog house back about a foot then lay across the dog house to reach. Though of course dog house design varies from brand to brand.

Was able to pull it out mostly from the dog house. Had to go to the wheel well to get enough leverage and the correct angle to get the ratchet on the belt tentioner.

Now I just need to find a good replacement. Autozone wants 191.00 minus 40 bucks for duralast gold. Going to check a few rebuild shops and see of maybe they have something better or better priced

Just take yours in and get it rebuilt. It should be a lot cheaper.

I found one on Amazon for way less than that, though mine being a 2002 model uses a different wiring connector plug.

Found a shop, they didnt have any rebuilds, but will rebuild mine for 140. Only a few bucks cheaper than auto zone but I believe I will get a better quality product

133 bucks after taxes, completely rebuilt with lifetime guarantee.

Next I need to look at new plugs and wires. I hear iridium is the way to go[ATTACH]
