AC condensor

Has anyone ever relocated their AC condenser to another location to not be behind of the trans. cooler. this is a complete design failure or lack of. I realize the importance of cooling the trans... but 160-180 degree air going into the AC condenser is very inefficient, thinking of relocating my AC condenser with a set of separate fans.

Just my opinion, if your A/C is NOT cooling, its not because of the condenser location.

I live in the desert southwest, and my dash AC does just fine, very seldom do I have the genset with house ACs running, of course I am not one to have to have it 65 degree in the RV.

Whats the temp coming our of your dash vents?

I don't disagree that your AC condenser should work "better" without pre-heated air blowing thru it, BUT I can assure you the OE placement was not without serious design testing and multiple layers of study by automotive engineers. Almost everything WCC did was approved by engineers at the Union City, IN assembly plant and then their work was re-examined and either modified or approved by another set of engineers in South Africa. This two-fold engineering process was because the owner of WCC, prior to Navistar, was from S. Africa and he was committed to building the best RV chassis available.

Granted, there was also some consideration given to production efficiency and space utilization, but the "stacked" placement of the three heat exchangers was deemed acceptable from an engineering perspective.

If you do devise a better placement and methodology for cooling the AC condenser, I hope you will share it here for others to consider. I think the R-26 "UFO" rear-engine chassis has its AC condenser mounted down low up front and a fan provides the airflow, but I can't remember "how" it is protected from road debris.

Well when I devise a better design this winter during down time I will forward information. I would also note that S.S. expanded metal should provide ample protection from road debris.

Ed

The AC condenser on my UFO is mounted down at the bottom on the side at the rear of the Coach.

Thanks, Wayne. I'm assuming you are not talking about the "basement" AC that WBGO used back then.

I'm not sure where I got the idea that the condenser was up front on the UFO.

The OP is planning to re-design the "stacked" exchangers on a front engine gasser. I sincerely wish him good luck.

The condenser for the basement air is located on the passenger side rear and the dash AC condenser is on the drivers side rear.

Wayne, would you happened to know if on your UFO is the dash AC condenser located in front of the oil coolers or behind?

Thankyou in advance.

I don't know where the oil cooler is located. I will have to look at some point.

It's likely a dual unit. Dual as in....2 sided. One side is AC condenser and the other oil cooler. Will have an aux. fan (1 or 2) on the front side.
