Alignment Question

I have a 2008 Winnebago 26 foot Sight Seer motorhome on a Workhorse chassis and have been told to have 5 degrees positive castor cranked in when I get a front end alignment. I have added some chassis mods but still getting quite a bit of rut tracking and white knuckle driving. Any opinions pro or con about the alignment change?

DG,

1) Have you had your coach weighed? If you don't have an adequate % of the weight on the front axle it could have major effect on the handling. If you are towing, the tongue weight will subtract from the front axle.

2) I suggest calling a couple local truck tire & alignment shops and ask your questions. You may get a common answer that would give you some confidence an alignment may help.

3) Call Jon at Brazel's 877-786-1576. A major portion of their business is improving handling problems. They are one of the sponsors of this forum and are very familiar with the Workhorse chassis.

Good luck,
Bill

Alignment Question

Grimesy, the 5 degree caster change helped me significantly. I had that done last year, after replacing tires. Previously have had coached weighed (individual wheel weight), added trackbar (Omey's website DIY), even replaced Bilsteins which were probably due because of age(8 years) and vehicle weight. Local truck suspension/alignment place did it, took about an hour total time.

Thanks for the answers I will make my next project be the alignment and look into the trackbar. A lot of small motorhomes, like mine, flew by me in a hard wind yesterday so I know it can get better. Made me miss my pusher which is parked in a RV park.

DG, Of course you will want to have your alignment checked. You didn't say which Workhorse Chassis you have? A 26 foot motorhome could be on a W-18 chassis and that might make a difference.

We have seen and read fabulous success posts about folks with W-24s that have dialed in more caster however you may want to research your need to accomplish the change first.

You mention mods? Can you elaborate? In my experience my Safe-T-Plus and F&R Track Bars have zeroes out white knuckle driving.

alignment

Not sure what chassis I have will get the books out and read up. Although this is an older RV it is new to me. With my health issues I can't do a lot of the things I did before (sigh).

I had 3 Ts in Lake Havasu City,AZ put their system on which on previous motor homes has cured a lot of problems, especially the angled rear system. Will provide more info.

Don, the 6th digit of the VIN will tell you what chassis you have.

Is front suspension on solid axle, or coil springs?

besides adding more + castor I feel Toe is more important. I have mine set at between 0 (zero) to less than 1/16" toe in and have no issue on rough or grooved roads. I have not added + castor.

if you do add more + castor check your toe after, as castor will change toe.

more + castor also helps the steering to return more easily back to center after a turn.

I bought my coach new, it is 98 chevy chassis. first I added helper/overload springs to the front, yes it is possible. I then increased the size of my front roll bar and used polyurethane bushings. Last and most importantly I installed a "bearing" bell crank. Don't know if yours still has the cone shaped bell crank with a grease nipple on it. They are notorius for creating a "loose" feeling in the steering. They are not cheap but make a huge diff in the handling in the wind and tracking. lastly, experiment with your spring air bags. I foung when mine were pumped up hard I didn't like how the coach handled so I lowered the pressure. I like the way my coach handle's now and have 135k on it. good luck!

Bell Crank that I used, I didn't buy it here.

speed racer: 2* is not much. Your toe should change going 5*. What was your toe before changing castor 2*?

Alignment

My 26 foot 2008 Winnebago Sightseer is mounted on a W16000 Workhorse chassis with new Goodyear tires with fronts set at 85 PSI the chassis has the 3 Ts suspension upgrade and solid front axle. Unless I get a big negative from my truck alignment center I will go with the 5 degree positive castor addition. I will also have them analyse any other suspension problems. Thank all of you for your assistance, you can always rely on IRV2 members for advice. Usually I hang out at the Winnebago forum, I am on my 4th, but with the Workhorse chassis on this little guy I will be a frequent visitor and hopefully be able to participate.
