Allison Filler Tube Grommet

Has anyone replaced the grommet that seals the filler/dipstick tube of their Allison transmission? I am hoping to change mine next month when I do my fluid change but am fearful of it breaking apart and going inside the transmission.

Honestly I wouldn't worry about it. When I change transmission fluid I always drop the pan and clean it out anyway and change the internal filter. Change the grommet at the same time and you won't have a problem.

I don't recall there being one on my transmission tube and I've changed the fluid many times. Are you using Transynd?

LETMEGROW....is your an Allison 1000 transmission? Allison recommends never changing the internal filter unless the transmission is being overhauled. Only yhe external spin-on filter should be changed.

Yes, this will be the second change with Transynd.

Why bother with it unless you see the fluid contaminated with water when you do your fluid change? You would probably be better off leaving it alone.

I plan to carefully clean the area and then try to remove. If it looks like it might turn into a disaster I might leave it alone.

I wouldn't think it would be too hard to change. You just need to be sure and remove all the attaching hardware so the tube is free to move upward.

Allison Filler Tube Grommet

Looks like one really big bolt on the dipstick tube, but haven’t thoroughly scoped it out yet. Hope to get to this in a couple of weeks.

I checked my Allison 1000 filler tube and dipstick. There in no grommet of any sort on the tube.

However on the dipstick up inside it there is a rubber gasket that acts as a seal.

On mine, the tube goes into the top of the pan mount. The grommet goes into the transmission and then the tube goes into the grommet. Looks like this.

The transmission in question is a 2100 series, not a 1000. Have no idea if that makes any difference or not. I really don't see how the tube wouldn't leak at the transmission if there is no o-ring or gasket of some type to effect a positive seal.

That grommet looks identical to those used on 4L60E and 4L80E GM transmissions.
