Is there a way to adjust the shift points on the Allison 1000? I find that after 2500 miles, I am getting use to the transmission but would prefer that the shift point in 4th and 5th gear kick in lower.

That's my only thought on it. 4th gear is OK with me but you will have to go faster than 55 in order to get the T1000 to shift into 5th gear. Once in 5th you can back down and go slower to a point without dropping 5th gear. I do believe it will downshift to 4th if you hit 1800 RPM.

Rocky 2:
Your allison 1000 has predetermined speeds when shifts occur. According to the manual "shift calibration" includes several sets of shift points which may be used according to current or anticipated operating conditions. Do you not have a switch on your dash to change as you desire between 4th and 5th? Use of this has to be above 55 mph. I use mine for that particular situation as the Allison shop will tell you the same. But kick down should occur also in association with the gas pedel which is electroniclly operated.

Are you saying that there is a separate switch, other than the basic shift lever? I think I have just the basic shift lever.

Thanks for the info. I was afraid it was something like that.

The gearshift lever offers you P-R-N-D-3-2-1 The OD switch locks out 5th gear and will allow you to manually switch to 4th or "D". Take a look in your Workhorse Owner's Manual, it's in there.

This switch is useful when calling for engine braking on slight down grades or on a level road and for increasing engine RPM when approaching an up grade.

The switch should be located on your dash panel. Perhaps one of the other Fleetwood (Southwind) owners can comment on this.

You're right on DriVer. I don't have a Southwind but the Bounder dash is very similar. My "Overdrive" switch is on the dash panel just to the left of the speedo.

Thanks all. Yes, I know about the OD off switch. I was just hoping that I could get into higher gears at lower rpm's, particularly 5th gear. Cruising along a flat road at just under the shift point seems like a waste of gas.

I agree Rocky. What I normally do is speed up to just over 55 and let the tranny settle into 5th gear, then I back down to about 50 or so and it stays there, just kind of loping along. The T1000 is, however, very self-protecting to itself and the engine. It won't let you lug the engine, so if you start dropping much below 50 mph it will drop down to 4th.

Great tranny!

Shift points were brought up at a Allison transmision class I attended at Lazydays. The instructor stated the transmission will reset itself to the individual driving habits. This is not a desired thing. He suggesterd that pushing the throttle to the floor for 2-3 sec. once-an-awhile will help the trany maintain the original settings.

I'm not certain of this but "I think" this only applies to the Allison 3000. I don't think the 1000 and 2100mh "learn" from your driving habits.

Tom N - you are right. At least the 1000 series has several predetermined shift speeds that come from the TCM control modual. It depends on how much the operator steps on the throttle and also can change according to operating conditions such as fluid temperature. There is also a complete secondary of alternate shifts schedules that the TCM uses on demand from the operator but I don't know of a motorhome that has this feature. Your dash would have a light that illuminates when it is activated if it does. There is also a third electornic feature called a kickdown detent but again I don't know of a motorhome that has this feature either (in the gas driven models). This also incorporates two seperate shift schedules. But be as it may we have the basic model which includes an electronic throttle control hooked into the TCM and a primary shift schedule. I probably gave too much info here that will probably confuse the situation more.

I just got back from Valley Power Systems an Allison Service Center, Adj, it turns out that you are not totally wrong as long as you are refering to the 2000/2400 series/2000MN. These transmissions offer the electronic controls to vehicles up to 30,000 GVW/GCW. The engine and trans talk to each other via an advanced powerful 32-bit microprocessor. It stays in constant communication with the engine to determine the exact shift point (as we were talking about in the 1000 series and not to be confused with the shift calibration) for maximum performance.

The Allison 1000 also "learns" driving habits. This is the same basic tranny used behind the Chevy DURAMAX engine. It has a pre-set range of settings for shift points. It will not shift outside of that range, but it will adjust the points to your driving style. It seems to me it is called TAP (trannsmission adaptive pressure)???

The simplest (and I am not sure the most correct) way to have the tranny re-learn shift patterns is to disconnect the battery for several minutes and then re-connect. It seems to me in the Workhorse training they told us that this wasn't the best thing to do, but in the Chevy class they said it wasn't a problem.

My suggestion is to drive it they way you like, and see after some time if it begins to match your driving style.

On the earlier trannys they had a problem that while it was learning your driving style the shift points would be too rough and customers were brining their trucks back to the dealer thiking there was a problem. They solved this problem by loading a more mild default while it was learning.
