Sure did not want to hear that. Write a cheque and splice the main brace!

Fastest way to bust a exhaust bolt on GM is pulling a hill and then immediately park and shut the engine off... gotta let the beast cool down a bit first..

Apparently there is one bolt that is very deep inside the head, so they need to take it to a machine shop to have it drilled, so the drill will stay centered and not ruin the hole. They tried to weld it, but could not get the bolt out.

OUCH!

Heads pulled, repaired and re-installed. Lifters will not compress. Apparently gummed up. So the intake must come back off, most likely the lifters replaced. Hopefully the cam is OK, otherwise pulling the cam is a significant pain. I think that would mean pulling the radiator.

Wow, 50 years of mechanics and never heard of anything like that.

Lifters won't compress and it may need a cam ?

Get someone else to look at it before they bury you.

If they are not bled down, they won’t compress. Unless there was an issue prior to the head removal, they should be OK. Not sure I trust whoever is doing the work.

Secondly, if the heads are off then removing lifters is a two minute job. Was this discovered after reassembly? Either I am missing something or something is fishy.

It was discovered after re-assembly. Basically, the whole left bank had no compression. They stated the engine was pretty gummed up inside. Kind of makes me concerned about the lower half the motor.

They mixed up the pushrods or rocker arms. Half of the pushrods are 1" longer.

Hope they didn't bend the valves if they did that.

Lifters clack when gummed up, they don't pump up.

Hmm, could they really miss 1" difference difference with the push rods? I could see if it was 1/4" difference missing it. I've not been inside that engine, so I don't know what you can see, or can't, but could they miss that?

Does anyone know if this is a zero clearance engine? I'm a little concerned about potential damage, even with even a just partial lack of closure of the valve.
