calling all Workhorse generator men

well I searched all the gen-no-start threads and have not found my problem.

Generator-Onan Microquiet 4000.....All of a sudden I'm getting a good cranking but no-start and a code 36 [no run but no command shutdown].....tank full, plenty of fuel pumping. clean low hour unit it just ran perfect a week ago.

I know 99% of the time its fuel pump/filter...... BUT the anti-dieseling solenoid at the bottom of the carb has no voltage on startup try......giving the solenoid 12VDC I get starting then surging.

Carb is CLEAN......filter GOOD.......pump flowing ALOT of gas.....oil FULL.

I believe bad oil level sensor gives a different code.

I suspect control board....when I initially went to start it I had a battery problem and think a voltage surge got it.

any other IDEAS before I spend 329$?????

I think code 36 just means the engine stopped without being told to.
If it doesn't attempt to start at all (turns over but no sign of running) - I would guess no spark. There are 2 sparkplugs in that geny, but you only need to test the one with easy access.
These inline spark testers are cheap and worth having around to see if there is spark to the plug. Any autoparts store or Wal-Mart carries them. IIf no spark to the plug - check the coil/magneto input for a low voltage pulse from the control board.

Here's the procedure:

FYI - I had a problem where my geny would start and then die with any load. The rubber fuel line feeding the geny was soft and collapsing - $2 of fuel line from NAPA fixed it.

thanks tom

but the gen runs except for surging [not normal] when I feed 12VDC+ directly to the antidiesel solenoid [instead of letting the control board feed that, which it is not doing] so I'm sure its getting spark at both plugs.

but i'll save those links for future deals.

Here's a link to some T/S procedures that may help.

thanks Tom

its funny I did extensive hull modifications to Bob Shaffner's 66' yacht in '99..... he started Flight Systems in 1968...they started off remaning ALL the electric then electronic moduls replaced in any chrysler warranty repair.....and never sold it tho he went public but stayed n ran it.....he's gone now, along with many people I knew.

But anyway, the guide is helpful to a point...I did not see it on their site til u pointed it out.....it's the control board that fires up the fuel anti-dieseling shutoff solenoid......so I would say that's what I need.

thanks.

Just a note, it's a Cummins/Onan generator. The most commonly used brand of generator used by just about every MH manufacturer regardless of chassis.

I mentioned this because you would probably get more views and responses if this were posted in the MH General-Discussions or the RV Systems & Appliances forums.
