Unhappy Camshaft Position Sensor, 2003 Workhorse

I'm having a check engine light on my 2003 Mountain Aire 8.1 Workhorse. Engine code PO342 or Camshaft Position Sensor low voltage. Apparently this sensor has been discontinued by GM and would require a conversion update 4 part kit to replace the timing cover and chain etc. Has anyone installed this update or have any ideas on what to do? I replaced the sensor with an aftermarket sensor but the check engine light still comes on and the engine runs okay. I would like to find an OEM sensor #12575183 but none are available. Help!:

You might do some checking.

I had to replace the crank sensor in my 2005 Jeep with Hemi 5.7. When I was finished installing it didn't fix the problem but when I did more research I found the in some cases the sensor had to go through a "relearn" process, normally done with a scan tool, which I didn't have. More searching and found that I could go through a manual relearn by turning the ignition on without starting and pressing the accelerator all the way to the floor 3 times. Started the engine and the CEL went out and the engine is running great.

You may have to do the same thing but may have to take it to a shop. I did do a general search and some Chevy's do have to do a relearn, not sure on the 8.1.

I also found this that has a manual method.

Yes the Relearn is an option for the 8.1 engine. However, the relearn option requires an engine RPM between 4000 and 4500. My engine would only hit 3800 RPM's.because of the lower RV setting and would not relearn per my mechanic.

You might check this out: Camp Position Sensor at Amazon.

They say it fits 8.1L GM 2001-2003. I presume Chevy is the same as Workhorse in this case.

Never mind...they say it is out of stock!

Yes, that's an aftermarket sensor made in China and not OEM. Not sure why these aftermarket sensor's don't work as well as the OEM.

Is it possible with a scan tool that it overrides the RPM limit and does the relearn. Did your mechanic actually try the relearn?

Here's a thought. Indmar modifies engines for marine use. This Indmar 2002/2003 Cam Position Sensor might work for you. It might not hurt to contact them and see what they think. It seems a little expensive.

My mechanic did try to relearn the sensor with his scanner and could not override the RPM limit. Is there a manual way to relearn the position sensor on the 8.1 workhorse 2003?

Camshaft sensor

Been on here as Aerbus, 2203, 22W Etc. for years but had to change Info.???
Anyway 3800 RPM limit? Why? Redline is 4500 RPM. Have made mistakes in the past and gone up to 5K. OUCH! That might be something to ask about. Anybody else with a 3800 RPM limit? Never heard of that. Have had 2 workhorse chassis RVs and both with 4500 red line. Just sayin'.
