Cat Converters

What is the REASON for a Cat to plug up?Can you remove them completely without causing any issues with performance?

Many factors can contribute to a catalytic converter plugging up .
Engine miss fire, injectors leaking , extended idle times , short trips where engine is shut off before exhaust system comes to temperature.

Removal , is a loaded question .
State laws may make it illegal .
Location of sensors in the exhaust system ; that monitor converter performance ; can effect engine performance and result in CEL illumination that can only be temporarily erased . (Chassis year dependent ).

Can it be done , with hacks to trick the Engine Control Module to think the converter is still there ? Probably .
Is removal a good idea in all cases ? Probably not.

The 8.1L GM engine in our motorhomes does not have an after cat O2 sensor so the ECM won't know if it is there or not. I suspect it will run fine without a cat.

It is illegal to remove the cats in all 50 states! If you do not have mandatory emissions tests where you live no one would know...probably.

If you have a GM 7.4/8.1 removing/gutting the cat will give you random EGR codes

Altering an emissions control system is a *federal* issue first, a state issue maybe (California, a few others).
