Charger/Converter recommendations

Hi All,

HAPPY EASTER!!!

2004 Southwind 34C
30 amp
Located in Pensacola Fl.

Two 6V DEKA GC10 75 Amp 105 minute batteries (unknown age) I believe that there are due replacement as I have had the coach for 3 years and have had them in different stages of charge. I suspect that they are at least 6 years old and were not properly maintained. I am partially responsible as I am just learning about proper battery maintenance.

WF-8750 charger/converter
Shore Power 20Amp via dogbone.

I found my batteries boiling over. Initial thoughts converter charger is shot. I understand that there are several other possibilities (relays, Switches, dead cells, etc.).

I am currently charging the batteries off of a regular charger. Batteries are disconnected from coach and filled with distilled.
1. I will check voltage after the charge tomorrow
2. Reconnect to chassis and see what the charge voltage is initially and later to see if it drops off to about 13.1.

I expect that I will replace batteries and probably the charger/converter.

Does anyone recommend a charger/converter as an upgrade to the original?

Thanks in advance

My vote would be a Progressive Dynamics converter

6v Charged batteries read 5.9. I am assuming they need to be replaced.

WF-8750 is the power center, the converter could be a few different ones. I'm not sure I'd be rushing out to replace it unless it proved to be bad.

Which is the next point, prove the issue before throwing parts at it. It's a given that at nominally 6 years old the batteries don't owe you anything so new ones are in order. What I would do is install your new set and monitor the charge cycle the converter supplies to now known good batteries. I would lay odds it works just fine and you can save the time, trouble and expense of replacing a working (and likely decent) converter.

Hey Mark,

I appreciate the input.
However, If you re-read my post I never did say that I was going to start throwing parts at the problem.
I layed out my plan to replace the batteries and go from there.
The purpose of the post was to begin gathering information about the converters/chargers that folks had used as replacements.

I got two US Batteries for a good price (140 each). The test results are pretty comparable to Trojans.

I have always found the IOTA brand charger / power supplies well worth the cost. Be sure to get the IQ4 version.
This assumes that you are not looking for an inverter / charger.

I offered that you don't know what you have there and it may not need replacing. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

USB's are decent batteries, in RV service I think they'll work out well.
