If you won’t be starting the motor in temps below 32*F you can use “straight” 30 weight oil, but the standard recommended viscosity for wide temperature ranges is 5 W 30 gasoline engine motor oil. I prefer 100% synthetic, like Mobil 1 for example, but conventional “Dino” oil will work just fine. Under NO circumstances should you use 10 W 40 or any other blend beyond 10 W 30.

I believe capacity is in the 6-7 qt capacity as I just changed mine. Am a big Mobil 1 fan but any quality synthetic should do just fine and I change once a year regardless of mileage. And a good Wix made filter. Think mine was a Napa Gold.

Just don't overfill and check the level frequently. Some use a little oil...mine doesn't seem to.

To be exact, it is 6.5 qts with the recommended 1/2 qt filter PF454.

I use Mobil 1 synthetic oil and a one quart filter in our 8.1. It takes seven quarts at oil change time using this size filter. I use 10W/30. I do not operate the motorhome in extreme cold conditions.

Just one follow up, many people use 1 or even 1.5 qt filters on their 8.1L Vortec engines, several people have even reported that theirs came from the factory with a 1 qt filter not the so called standard 1/2 qt

4WD trucks have the half-quart because the front drive shaft runs directly below (and it is a true PITA to get them off). Have to be very careful with replacements because the PF454 is no longer widely available.

In a 2WD application I'd use the biggest one I could buy that is above the bottom of the pan.

7.5 qts of 5w30 Mobile 1 and the extra capacity Wix 51794 filter.

Yes 6.5 qts. with std filter. Check regularly in the morning before you head out while on trips. I will use roughly 1qt at 1000 mi. I don’t let it get down that far usually topping off at 1/2 qt low point. It’s always being refreshed at that rate so I extended my change interval. Mobil 1 10w-30 for me because I’ll take mine out once a month during the winter for exercise.
