Clay L: you are correct about the nuts being 33mm, thank you for pointing that out. But I'm sure Max's 1 5/16 sae does the job, too.

Just for grins, I used a metric conversion table and learned:
33mm = 1.30 inches
1 5/16 = 1.3125 inches

I think the difference of .0125 is equal to about 1/3 of one mm (definitely a loose fit), but I've probably got that much dirt on mine

Oldusedbear,

It's not an optical illusion... That's the rubber cushion/sleeve and the spacer. The heat from the cutting torch did most of the damage.

But, that is not what is wrong with the picture!

Well.... your shock's were mismatched... one's a Monroe (which WH probably replaced for you way back when), the other's one of the POS shocks that came stock with the chassis (I bet it's not much of a shock anymore) but I wouldn't consider any of this "wrong with the picture"... OK stick me with a fork 'cause I'm done. What's wrong?

What a bunch of wimps. What do you mean your getting too old? When I changed mine, it only took a 3ft pipe on the 3/4" ratchet for one nut. But that was 2 years ago and I was only 77.

Mahlon you are correct. Believe it or not the original shock was installed on the drivers side and the Monroe Magnum was installed on the passengers side. The rears were the originals and there was only 12,000 miles on the coach. The 3 originals were shot and the Magnum was borderline.

i used a harbor freight 3/4", 42"long 600# torque wr ($140) and 3/4 socket set ($60) to replace my shocks with konis. it took a LOT of torque to break the nuts loose. i used a 1-1/8 box end with vice grips on the box end to hold the nuts and a 1/2 drive impact wr to run the nuts off. the bolts are very long.
i bought an additional 10" 3/4 extension at a used tool store to use to torque the rear lug nuts to 475'#. the 1-5/16 socket is a little sloppy but it works. the wheel liner nuts are 1-3/16 and i torque them to about 75'#
my moho had 8k miles on it and all my lug nuts were torqued to 300-350'#. they were probably that way from the factory. there was no danger of the wheels coming off due to the 4 jamb nuts holding the wheel liners on. it is possible that the wheels could have moved back and forth, thereby damaging the studs. that did not happen in my case.

since i cannot edit my recent post, i need to add that the upper shock bolts are very long and have SELF LOCKING NUTS on them, making it necessary to hold the bolts/nuts with something like a 1-1/8 box wrench or vice grips when running the nuts off with a 1/2" impact wrench.

Thanks for the update on the self locking nuts. While I was under my MH today changing my fuel filter I visited the same bolts that you were talking about. I did get a shop with air tools to install my Konis.

Gee, I just changed my shocks. Used a good 1/2 impact with 120lbs air and backup wrench. Took about 10 min per wheel.

Bigdaddy,

That's the whole point... 90% of the time it's not a problem. But, the other 10% of the time you need a plan B.

Also, there is a phenomenon called "friction welding" that may come into play. It's commonly used in certain industries. But, I think with crush nuts, fine threads and the use of a HD impact you just may fuse the two parts (nut & bolt).

DanL,

The upper shock bolts on the front and rear shocks are 6". I believe the in 04/05 they started using same eye bolt setup on the rear lower mount instead of the shock mounted bolt attachment. The front lower mounting bolt is 8" do to using the front spring eye.
