Electrical knowledge needed!

Hi, I have just bought a Chevrolet G30 Travelmaster 1985 to renovate. Auto electrical wiring is my weak point and wondered if anyone can tell me what the elcetrical box in the top right of the engine is? It looks like mice have been at it and has resulted in it melting into a mangled mess (see picture). All electrics (Except one brake light and washer pump) seem to work fine. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Matt

That looks like a bulkhead feed through. It is a place to run wires from inside the cab to the outside world. The un-used (empty) holes are for options that the chassis does not have from GM. The black stuff may be only a sealant to block off un-used holes. I think that if you took out the screw in the middle it will unplug from the fire wall.

Unlike Rockwood I won't say "It looks like"

That **IS** a firewall connector. (It is the connector on the firewall where the wires feed trhough to under the dash) Looks like the engine side of it is well melted, you shoudl be able to remove the bolt and separate the two halves.. If the cockpit side is in good shape just replace the engine side harness.

Looks char-broiled to me. I would be looking for any possible causes before any repairs are done. You don't want a repeat.

Some of the black is shiny some isn't, consistency would be better. The wires or the wire keeper don't appear to be chard. It's hard to say, it's just weird. What does the nearby area look like? Is there any burnt odor?

Cheers all. Yes I got it split from the bulkhead. The bulkhead side of the connector is fine fortunately. I think it has been caused by mice. The vehicle has been stood 2 years and all the wires around the connector have been chewed by something. Getting parts for it in the UK is a challenge! Does anyone know any good online parts sites?

Cheers

Matt

There lots of parts common between GM motorhomes and step vans (commercial trucks). See Mill Supply | Snow Plow Parts - Stepvan Parts - Mower Parts - Autobody Restoration Parts

That is a common GM connector.. The only thing that may be different is what we call the pin out (Which pins are used for what) but any GM dealer should have the part. Or any GM parts source.

American Vehicles, West Midlands American Vehicles Suppliers of American Car Parts and Spares for American Cars UK

Ivan could be worth a try, GM stuff seems his speciallity. Otherwise google about and look for American parts places. Our first RV was a 1977 Dodge and parts were easy, even though we had the heavy duty chassis, less common in the UK. There is a couple of places west of Birmingham I used back then, one towards Sutton Coldfield the other on the A5 south of the M42, can't remember their names, but both had no bother getting parts, some within 24hrs, like suspension ball joints, which supprised me. Also, have you found rockauto yet? Nothing but good experiences yet, 4 to 5 days shipping from the US, all taxes etc done at point of sale.
