Drove from Anthony, TX to Pecos, TX today. About midway I got the following message displayed on the Workhorse W22 message center: NO J1850 ACTIVITY. We got something to eat in Pecos and then decided to fuel up. When I started it up the message was gone. While I had the message the speedo and tach still worked but the fuel guage stayed on full. I am not sure about the temp guage. Everything seemed to run OK and I had no problem getting to Pecos. Does anyone know what that message indicates? Thanks.

I would assume that J1850 is a connector and the computer didn't get a reading from that connector.

Exactly why you received this message can best be determined by an authorized service center. Your ECM computer will retain this message in its memory and a device called a Tech II will be used to interpret what the message is sending and how to resolve a problem if it exists.

It would appear that this isn't a mission critical issue since you are running OK. Just have it checked out the next time you bring your coach in for service.

Short excerpt from a docuent I downloaded a while back:
"SAE J1805 Description:
The SAE J1850 bus bus is used for diagnostics and data sharing applications in vehicles. The J1850 bus takes two forms;....cut - very technical ....
Developed in 1994, J1850 may be phased out for new designs. "

It sounds a lot like a intermittent connector problem since you lost it and then got it back. It could also be an intermittent problem with the engine computer itself.
Driver has the right idea - get it checked out.
Maybe they can find the problem

J1850 bus Description
The J1850 bus is used for diagnostics and data sharing applications in vehicles. The J1850 bus takes two forms; A 41.6Kbps Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) two wire differential approach, or a 10.4Kbps Variable Pulse Width (VPW) single wire approach. The single wire approach may have a bus length up to 35 meters (with 32 nodes). A high resides between 4.25 volts and 20 volts, a low is any thing below 3.5 volts. High and low values are sent as bit symbols (not single bits). Symbols times are 64uS and 128uS for the single wire approach. The ISO 9141-2 single-wire asynchronous interface operates at 10.4kbps

I found this in the

Workhorse Custom Chassis Service Information CD, Page 7907, Actia Instrument Cluster, page 8A-2

5. TROUBLE SHOOTING GUIDE

5.4.5. No J1850 Activity

If the cluster cannot detect J1850 data bus activity, the message "No J1850 Activity" is displayed on the message center. J1850 enters the cluster on pin 12.

Thanks all for your quick replies. I will check the connectors on the back of the cluster. We drove 293 miles today to Aledo, TX and everything was fine. I think you all are right, it is probably just a computer glitch. But I will check the connectors just to be sure. Thanks.

I Got the No J1850 Activity while on I40 Westbound between Needles and Barstow Ca. on May 3rd. The transmission would not shift into orout of OD, or between gears automatically. I could shift with the OD button on the dash and with the shift lever. We pulled over and called WH Service. After about 15 Min. I resterted and the error was gone. WH got us an appointment in Mojave Ca. for the 4th. All they did was tell me it was an actual error, not a computer glitch, but couldn't say what happened or if it could, or should be fixed. I've driven about 300 miles since then with no problem. Lost 4 hours of drive time in Mojave. j1850 seems to be a catchall error.

My scan gauge is connected permanently to the J1850 diagnostic connector. When I start my coach, I get the same message after the scan gauge "boots" up. I clear the message by pushing the trip button on the Actia cluster. Everything works normally after that.
