Front PS Wheel Lube Leak

I noticed a strange smell the other day when I got out of the moho. Smelled like something getting hot. Crawled under and noticed some oil/grease on the inside of the passenger side wheel. Checked the wheel hub and it was low on lube. The smell was like hot gear lube so I think Iíve found the source.

The wheel hub is the Stemco 4065. Been googling and found some info and references to an outer seal but nothing for an inner seal specific to Stemco. Found some other references for an inner seal that goes over the spindle (not 100% sure on the spindle part). Since my leak is on the inside of the wheel (outside looks clean and dry) I assume there is some kind of inner seal. Can anyone provide some insight on this? Itís not something Iím equipped to tackle so Iím going to have to find a shop. Would like to have some idea of what might be going on before I talk to a shop.

Kevin did a video on a complete brake job on his W24, check out the link to the thread, I believe the front wheel seal starts around 38 min in.

There us a inner oil/grease seal that's pressed into the hub, or pressed onto the spindle on some.

Wheel, caliper and nut behind the stemco cap need to come off to pull the hub.

Thanks CJ7365. Iíve seen a little of that video but the specific part you referenced helped explain things very well. Iíve watched several of Kevinís videos and he does a great job with them.

Thanks twinboat. Your input and CJ7365ís was just what i was looking for. Now to find a shop that can do it for me for a reasonable price.

Got another question about this. How often do the bearings need to be replaced when this seal starts leaking? Checked with one shop today and they mentioned the possibility of needing to replace the bearing. They estimated $200 to $300 to replace just the seal. I’m guessing their shop rate is ~$100/hr.

A failing bearing can cause a seal to leak.

That should be easy to check by jacking that wheel up and feeling for excess play in them.

If they say the bearings are bad, have them show you the parts.

Google bad tapered bearing pictures to see what good and bad.

Update on my leak. Took it to BestOne Tire in Knoxville, TN and they confirmed a leaking inner seal. Two hours and $375 later I was on my way. Shop rate was $125 + $38 for the seal + $18 for Lucas hub oil + $6 for brake cleaner + ~$30 for shop materials + tax. They did a good job and allowed me to watch and ask questions which I very much appreciated. I think they were a little high on the seal and other materials, but overall I was very pleased with the service. The mechanic was great to work with!

Thanks for the update. Well $375 is not that bad, considering you were on you way in 2 hrs, and did not have to deal with that heavy tire. Plus you got to watch and ask questions, usually that is not allowed.

Could you tell why it was leaking, was the seal torn? Also, how many miles on your RV.

CJ7365, All I can tell you about the seal is the mechanic said it wouldnít have been long before it got bad. Said the bearing was ok and there was no movement in the wheel indicating bearing issues. The seal was a National 370150B. My moho has just shy of 30k miles. I assume it was an original seal, but donít know for sure as Iím not the original owner.

Thanks for the info, I always like to ask about mileage just out of curiosity.

Do you know when installing the seal, did the mechanic put the seal on the spindle or on the wheel hub?

The reason I ask, is the Stemco brand actually has a metal sleeve that goes on the spindle then you put the seal on the spindle, then put the hub on.

15 year old with less than 30k. Sounds like has been sitting quite a bit. Rubber in seals could have dried out not being turned in oil bath to stay soft. My 2007 Winnebago Voyage W22 chassis 35L lost seals at 55k last year. Mechanic said seals were cracked & dry, Had just got back from 11k trip out north-west from Florida & found oil all over inside front wheels.
