The easiest way to remove fuel from a fuel tank is to disconnect the line after the generator fuel pump and run the pump by pressing the stop button on generator. This is assuming you have a fuel injected generator. That only gets you down to a 1/4 tank though. You could also remove the in-line fuel filter and trap the fuel from there while someone cranks the engine.

I had my '04 tank changed under warranty last Nov '08 because of a crack at the spot weld.... just one month before the 5 yr emissions warranty was to expire. The emissions warranty is 7 yrs on cars but is 5 yrs on the large gvw vehicles like W22.
Notice to all W22 owners (for sure the '03/04 years): You may get 6 months advanced warning of the pending leak at the spot weld. I was getting a slight smell of gas fumes at times several months before I noticed a large wet spot on the tank. Keep an active nose when you're around and under the tank area.
If my W22 was out of warranty, I would of used one of the many gas tank repair kits available.
Since I had my tank failure, I've noticed quite a few forum posts on fuel tank leaks at the spot welds. My guess is that a lot of the tanks were produced with the spot welder equipment squeezing down a bit too much.
Another way to temporarily stop the leak .....
I used a rubber plug wedged tight between the spot weld and the external strap that holds the tank to chassis. I believe the internal baffles are placed right where the straps wrap around to provide greater structural strength. So you have a good chance the spot weld crack is under a strap and can be pinched off.

I have leak on '04 Adventurer, read this thread, went and looked today. Second Strap back drivers side looks like origination, middle of the damp area about 3 inches from bottom is what I will call a "pock mark", small chip like where I think a spot weld was. Going to clean and " JB Weld it tomorrow. we'll see.

Ya, that's where my leak was..... 2nd strap back, driver's side, spot weld about 2/3 of the way up.
Before you seal make sure there's no gas wicking out in the slightest ... must be real clean and dry. Put your leveling jacks down on the side to get it way up high away from the gas in tank. And it'll be easier to work under there too.
I'm not sure JB Weld is the best stuff to resist gas over long term. You can get sealer stuff made just to seal gas tanks.
Good luck,
Bill
