What is wrong with this Dex Cool. I just read (maybe old news) some people suing GM over Dex Cool. I have a new Nissan for a toad and it has green antifreeze. My last two Silverados had Dex Cool. I am condidering changing to the green stuff?????????

I think the problem with Dexcool is people believing that you can leave coolent, any coolent, in for 5 years or 50,000 miles and expect good things. I use Dexcool but I still change it every year. We're talking about very little money and time here and if folks can't devote that much attention to something as expenssive as a motorhome...need I say more?

I recently have had the cooling system serviced and the coolant was drained and restored using Prestone(brand) Dex-Cool.
I serviced my system at about the 4 year mark with 50K miles indicated. I also changed the T-Stat and radiator cap.

Dex Cool is made up of:
1) Ethylene Gylcol - 97% by weight
2) Diethylene Gylcol - 1-5% by weight
3) Potassium 2-ethyhexnoate - 1-5% by weight
It's #3 that some folks don't like.
OBTW - Prestone is owned by Honeywell the same folks that own Fram.
One more thing.... Honeywell also makes Wal Marts Super Tech Antifreeze which has the same formula as Prestone's regular antifreeze.. It just cost less.

How do you know Walmart antifreeze is made by Prestone with the same chemicals?

Well if you go to the Wal Mart MSDS and look up Standard Prestone Antifreeze and Wal MArts Super Tech Antifreeze you see that they both are made by Honeywall and have the same formula. On the super Tech MSDS it says Prestone!

At change time, can I replace the Dexcool in our 8.1 with the good old fashion green stuff without harming the engine?

That's what I did. Go to my web site and see how I did it and I didn't remove any block plugs or lower radiator hose.
