I'm curious if the ignition key has a chip in it for starting. The plastic cover grip portion of my key is black. Not sure if the color makes a difference......I know on my Jeep it does.......Grays have chips all others don't......at least that's what I was told at the dealership. Thanks
Brian

My experience tells me that there isn't a chip in the key nor have I heard from anyone that I know that there is a chip in the ignition key.

I went to a locksmith to have an extra key made and it was only a couple of bucks. That tells me that there probably isn't a chip otherwise it would have cost a lot more money.

And it wouldn't have worked.

No, there is no chip in the key. If there was, there would be a "+" or a "PKIII" engraved in the metal part of the key just below the black head. The head would also be thicker. This is how the "chip" keys are identified on the GM cars that utilize the PassKey III vehicle immobilizer system. There are also several other systems such as PassKey and PassKey II, but they are on much older GM vehicles dating back to the mid 80's for the Corvette for example. There's also currently a PassLock system that has all the anti-theft sensors and resistors built into the lock cylinder. This sytem uses no transponder chip or resistor in the key. To my knowledge, Workhorse does not employ any of these systems.
