1.0 Plus miles increase per gallon modification.

I finally decided it was time for a modification since the price of gasoline is on a steady up hill climb. With the modification I went from an average of 7.4 miles per gallon to 8.5 miles per gallon on long summer vacation trips.

This is a very cheap, economical way to increase anyone's gas mileage.

I reprogrammed the link from my brain to my right foot and now instead of driving 65 to 70 mph I drive 59 to 63 mph for an increase of over 1 mile per gallon of gasoline.

There are also other side benefits; safety, increased viewing, and keeping the other half happy.

The only negative so far is maybe making other people get a case of "Road Rage" if you don't stay to the far right and let them go. Amazingly, after about 4 or 5 hours on the road these same people will be passing you again.

Our first 6000 mile trip we only averaged about 7.4 miles per gallon driving between 65 and 70 mph. I really enjoyed the sound, the feel of power, the shifting of the transmission and the ride of our Work Horse chassis and 8.1 liter engine, but it sure didn't give us the 8.5 to 9 miles per gallon that the salesman told us we should get. So the next year's 6000 mile trip I decided to try and drive at not over 65 mph. I tried to keep the speed between 60 and less than 65 mph and our average rose to 8.5 plus miles per gallon.

Try it you might like it.

Ron

If you are towing a vehicle your speed should be 65 or less. Check the manual for your toad.

Congratulations, Ron. You have learned two things I have been aware of for years. Speed kills good gas mileage and never trust anything a salesman tells you.

I set my cruise at 2000 rpm and get in the granny lane. I consistantly get 8.3 mpg between Shelton, WA and Quartzsite, AZ.

I am still amazed at how fast people drive their cars and coaches. This coming from a motocross loving, so cal living 35 yr old male.

Drive slower people, smooth and slow.

I agree with the "slower" mode. On my last MH which was diesel pusher, I got 1 to 1.5 mpg better running @ 60mph than 65+. With the new "38T", I just set the cruise @ 60 and enjoy the drive.

I don't know if I've posted this before but here are the numbers for wind resistance on a 20,000lb coach 12' high and 8' wide:
@60mph 89.2 horsepower to overcome wind resist.
@65mph 113.4
@70mph 141.6

What's fun is when some idiot, It is even better if he is has a CB that's been abusing you verbally, Finally passes you, putts the pedal to the metal and... Then a couple miles down the road you pass him and either.

1: He is off in the ditch or

2: He is off on the shoulder chatting with the nice officer who is writing something down on that special pad of paper he carries with him.

Side not:

My brother used to say he did not like female police officers because they were more likely to give him a ticket (he is a professional driver)

I ask him if he found those women in uniform attractive and, Well, it took a bit but he admitted it. Do you ask them for a date? And he allowed as how he did.

Well, she gave you one "BUT I DID'NT MEAN WITH A JUDGE"

She'll be there

The number two 'Mod' to accomplish improved MPG, is weight loss. This can be applied equally to the MH and passengers( caution must be exercised when applying this technique to wives and family pets as it could result in injury to the messenger ). There is not much one can do to lessen the drag and/or rolling resistance, but taking off 10 - 20% of the GVWR will result in a measurable MPG increase on top of that from slowing down. Show the family your are serious by loading one less case of liquid enjoyment for the next trip. LOL

This will take your mind off the price of gas and fuel. May 28 is Memorial Day, lest we forget.

I probably never gave slow a long enough chance to see if it really gives me more MPG. I usually drive 70/75, the speed limit if it's not windy or a mtn.
But my LCD 'avg mpg' may not be accurate but it should be consistent, I'd think. I can run 70/75 mph on flat ground, no wind, and it will often say 9.7 or even 10 mpg. I know this may be BS but if I slow down to 60/65 , the avg mpg reading does not go up and coincidently or for what ever reason starts to drop my MPG.
Does any body elses Actia give 9.7 to 10 MPG readings? And even if it's not accurate, how can anyone explain why it seems to think I get as good or better fuel economy @ 75 as it thinks I do @ 65?
Not trying to argue, I'm just curious .

PS The LCD most definitly knows if I'm going into a side or headwind and shows about 6 MPG.
I've even seen it as low as 2 MPG climbing mtns.
On Edit: I've read here on the forum that when you put the LCD on Avg MPG that it averages the last 50 miles. I do not believe this to be true. My guess is that may be the avg for the last 10 miles or so.

Rather than the avg mpg try setting the dash to instantaneous mpg.
