What gauge wire will suffice for the ground?
As for the isolation solenoid (boost) What is the small wire attached for? Any idea? it disappears into the wiring harness (short run). Are both those smaller terminals ground posts?
Also just to add...all my coach electrical is working. I tested lights, heater, roof ac etc...(generator was running).

What I do know is the BIRD has 13.99 volts on the right side (big side just to left of blue wire bundle). Left side of BIRD shows 2.08 volts. The coach batteries are the same as the BIRD 13.99 volts.
The isolator relay delay I'm using:
|
If the chassis batteries are dead and the house batteries are charging, then the expected voltages on the two large cable connectors should be 13.99 and 2.08.
Jump the two together using one automotive jumper cable. The chassis battery will charge. Wait an hour and try to start the engine.
You can leave the jumper cable connected for 10 hours to fully charge the chassis battery or you can remove the jumper and drive for 10 hours using the alternator to fully charge the chassis battery.
I see good advice above for troubleshooting the BIRD.

Would running the ground from the empty terminal to the battery disconnect ground (white wire) be an issue? Appreciate the assistance everyone. My plan is to head out on the 21st. This is my only hold up.

Just to add:
When I went to start RV I had the coach batteries disconnected but not the chassis battery. I have a solar tender panel on top of the roof AC. Light glows red on interior ac panel. I had replaced the old panel with a 15 watt one a couple years ago. Apparently it did not keep the chassis battery tended.
Panel I bought:

There is a ground wire right next to the empty terminal. It has a red ring terminal on it. Take out the screw holing it and put that wire on the terminal.
The other small wire on the isolation/boost solenoid should be going to the " Solenoid or Relay " terminal of the IRD or BIRD.
The IRD or BIRD is the brains of the operation. It should have wires from the batteries going to it so it can sense voltage. May also have a spot for the boost switch.
I can't tell what you have now but you never had a BIRD. YOU Had a IRD. Isolation Relay with Delay. Look at the old picture.
Not sure where you got the idea you had a BIRD.

Ok..success. After running the ground wire the boost switch works. Engine started. Check the terminals for power these are my readings....
While engine runs....
Chassis batt...13.81
Isolator relay...left -13.74, right -13.71
Coach batteries...13.71
Battery disconnect...left 13.71, right 13.69, small + terminal -13.58
I just switched that red ringed ground for the relay delay to the ground terminal.

Engine off...
Isolator left side...12.53 volts right...12.55 volts.

Much appreciated for the assistance everyone. Glad this popped up here (home) rather than when on the road. Head out on 21st.
Ground wire it was.

The chassis 12 volt system requires a lead acid start battery be installed. Different systems fail in different ways without the chassis start battery.
The house batteries are deep draw type. Many deep draw battery bank systems are not capable of starting and RV engine. The boost button when it is working correctly only assists the chassis battery.

Nice work TB. The missing ground on the 4 post solenoid was it. I would bet the instructions with that solenoid mentioned grounding that extra lug.
Glad you got it figured out 1972.

With respect to the continuous duty solenoid (silver). Any idea what it's for?
The left big terminal runs directly to the positive side of chassis battery. The right one goes to the top circuit breaker to the right of the PS reservoir. The small white is ground and the red one runs along the large wire harness to inside RV drivers side then out of view.

That should be your battery boost solenoid. It closes when you push and hold the batter boost switch on the dash. It also closes and stays closed when the engine is running so the engine alternator can charge the coach batteries.
Edit: Upon closer look at your pictures, the wires going to the large terminals of that solenoid aren't big enough for battery boost. I am not sure exactly what that solenoid is. Maybe twinboat will respond.

That may be your house battery disconnect solenoid. If you have a battery switch near the door turn it off and on to see if operates that solenoid.
