This thread is about the GM 8.1L gas engine oil filter. My reply was also about the 8.1L oil filter. No mention was made of other engines, diesel or otherwise. I stand by my reply.

The point is in fact that the 8.1 oil filter is mounted vertical and other engines that have vertical mounted filters don't use drain-back valves. The reference to diesels was just an example that most would have realized! Of course you stand by your reply

Will both work. I use the longer filter for my 8.1.

Yes, that what I was saying. My experience with auto parts stores if the person behind the counter can't find the vehicle in the computer they are like the deer in the headlights. Apparently the OP found someone that knew what an 8.1 is.

You want to see "deer in the headlighrs" look? My son will go into the local Auto Zone and ask for something for a Chevy small block and the response is "What vehicle is it for?" so my son will then respond with "It's a 1953 Ford Customline"...talk about a confused look!

I use a 1 quart WIX 51060 ($7.47 on amazon, same filter as the NAPA1060 which is made by WIX) on my 8.1L, in fact I just installed one today. The smaller 1/2 quart size filters are needed on 4 wheel drive pickup trucks with the 8.1L as there is not enough room in them for the 1 quart to fit with the placement of the front drive shaft.

I just sold my 2002 Fleetwood Fiests 26' Class A motor home. We have had it for 21 years,(since new), and put on 74000 miles. We decided to downsize. Changed oil myself most of the time and at a dealer or Walmart on our way to Alaska. Changed at 3k always. Mostly used the STP filter. never had a problem except needing a double swivel wrench to get it out. Lived my 8.1 Chevy engine.

On my GM vehicles I have used AC filters and on my Ford F 53 I use a Motorcraft filter. The reason why I use OEM manufacturer specific oil filters is if the filter is defective and blows apart at the crimp or something else happens, I may have some recourse regarding the defective filter with the manufacturer.

Manufacturer Recommended

I tend to lean towards what the manufacturer recommends. The WH W22 service manual calls for a PF454. They are readily available so I use it. I know there are a lot of other options out there, but that is what I use. I change the oil and filter every 3000 miles so I don’t worry much about having a larger filter.

FRAM filter . . .good or bad?

Take a minute to hacksaw the end off a used Fram filter and compare to some other filter. SEEING the CARDBOARD inside the Fram told me to never buy one, buy YOU be the judge.

Have you compared Fram to all the other brands out there ?
No other filters use cardboard ?

Similar history. Except not ready to part with the 8.1 L Vortex. There just isn’t better gasser pound for pound.

Religiously, I’ve done annual 3,000 mile oil changes using Mobile1 Syn and lately using Mobile1 M1-111 filters. While larger oil filters have more surface area the filters all will pass oil at the point of least resistance. I’ve used larger capacity. Never felt the shorter filter wasn’t filtering just as well especially at such low mileage intervals. My oil has always dropped out in good shape.

It’s been years since I recently started posting again. But, I can say this with 100% certainty. People will always get exercised about their oil filter opinions and I doubt that will ever change.
