Overdrive Lockout Switch

Does anyone have an '01 W20 that can give details on OD button? I've read it's a momentary rocker switch, and also that it's a regular on/off rocker. Mine is not working, I've started a post on the Allison thread about no 5th gear, but I suspect it may have something to do with this button.

I think at some point mine was replaced with the wrong switch. The reasons behind that are, there are a few wires in the plug that don't have a corresponding pin on the switch. Looking at the chassis wiring diagram, there's no way the dash "od off" light would stay on if it was a momentary button. it would only stay on while you hold the button in, and that's what mine does. The replacement switch on the Ultra RV site does not look like a momentary switch, or like my switch. Although my switch matches all the other switches on the dash.

My question, were the early ones an actual on off switch? And maybe later they became a momentary switch after the lockout was available in GM trucks via momentary switch?

Our coach is newer but may be similar. On ours the OD switch is simply on-off. The light illuminates when OD is turned off. Can't imagine why anyone would want a momentary switch for OD. Have you tried driving at highway speed and turning off OD? If so, does the engine RPMs increase and stay higher or reduce when you take your finger off the switch. May at least narrow the issue.

Yea, it doesn't shift into 5th. The button doesn't do anything except when you press down on it the OD Off indicator on the IP lights up. as soon as you release it, the indicator goes out. That's part of why I think someone may have installed the wrong switch at some point and it should be like a normally open on off type switch.

If you can change out the switch yourself, why not just do it. At least you'll either fix it or narrow the list of possible problems.

I will if it's the problem. Right now I'm just trying to figure out if it's supposed to be a momentary switch or not.

It's an on and off switch.

Is the OD light, lit on the dash?

Mine is a momentary switch. The light on the dash is only on when I hold the bottom of the switch in. Release it and light goes off. I'm thinking someone has put in the wrong switch.

So if it's an on/off switch like a light switch, and you leave it on (od disabled) and shut the rig down, when you restart od is still disabled? Very little info online about it, but I've also read that its supposed to be momentary and works like a latching circuit, so whenever you start the rig od is enabled. But that doesn't make sense based on the chassis wiring diagram I have.

If you have the 5 speed Allison, the proper switch is a 2 position “on/off”switch. When properly wired, it “should” light the dash warning “OD Off” when you have 5th gear locked out and cannot upshift from 4th gear, which is 1:1 ratio.
It definitely should NOT be momentary.

Thanks everyone. We just got this thing a few months ago, and this weekend was the first time really cruising on the highway above 50 and I realized it wasn't shifting to 5th.

I definitely have the wrong switch in there. I unplugged it and went for a drive, and it shifted to 5th at 55mph. Thing is the switch is exactly the same as all other switches in the dash. The harness is also labeled just like others near it like headlights and stuff. The harness plug is specific to that switch and only plugs in one way, but the wires in the plug don't match up with all the terminals on the switch. Makes me wonder if it left the factory with the wrong switch 18 years ago and has never been in 5th gear in 60k miles.

Anyway, I'm about to order switch W0001809, but that plug looks nothing like my harness. I may still have to run down some wires and redo them to make it work right.

Thanks again,
