Park lever locked
What locks the shift lever in park on a 2002 Damon steering column ? Workhorse with a 8.1 . Performed an upgrade on ignition switch with new switch and relay to relieve the overloaded switch . I now have to have the engine running to move the shift lever from park ! Can some one explain how this works and where is the lock ? Thanks .

Does this help?
PARK (P): This position locks your rear wheels. It is
the best position to use when you start your engine.
Ensure the shift lever is fully in PARK (P) before
starting the engine. Your vehicle has a brake transmission
shift interlock. You have to fully apply
your regular brakes before you can shift from PARK
(P) when the ignition key is in RUN. If you cannot
shift out of PARK (P), ease pressure on the shift
lever and push the shift lever all the way into PARK
(P) as you maintain brake application. Then move
the shift lever into the gear you wish. (See “Shifting
Out of Park” in the index).
In the event of a shift interlock solenoid malfunction,
turn the key to OFF, pull the shift selector lever into
NEUTRAL (N) and start the engine. Make sure to
set the parking brake before starting the engine.

I know what the park lever does . Looking for info on how the solenoid works ? The solenoid ( on the lower part of the steering column ) is pulled by a small cable from the key switch . Is the lock mechanism in the upper column ? I can only move from park when the engine is running ! When I service the MH I like to move the wheel left and right and can't with out it running ! Thanks

The solenoid on the steering column , next to the ign switch , gets power when the brake pedal is applied . It pushes a small cable up the column and unlocks the park lever . I an going to leave it off for now . If I want to unlock and not start the engine I can just push the cable up by hand . Thanks for the help .
