compared to one of the smaller deisel engines in let's say 38ft coach just how well does the 8.1 compare

Think your going to have to be more specific as to what your looking for.

Horsepower, torque, costs of oil/filter, etc. way too vague to give an answer.

Power, I'll address 0-60mph.

The 8.1 will beat a diesel from 0-60mph.

If you're refering to pulling power a diesel will pull a heavier sled than the 8.1.
