OK, so for the first time my "Range Limiter" light came on this morning. Here are the circumstances, I was going downhill in a campground, fairly steep, so I started downshifting from D all the way to 1st stopping at each gear before continualing. Then, after slowing down to a craw, when I steped on the gas there was nothing, like I was in neutral. My first reaction is to shut off the engine and restart when unusual things happen. But I looked at the dash first and noticed that the "Range Limiter" light was on. I was going absolutely slow not even over rev to 1st. I breaked to a stop shut it off waited a minute, restarted and everything worked fine. Any one else ever have this unusual thing happen to them?
If anyone can explain the "Range Limiter" to me it would be appreciated. It is not covered in my manual.

Check your ownewr's manual under RPM limiter. If you shift into gear at high RPMs, you will need to replace your U joints and maybe the complete drive shaft.

Bigdaddy, well I was not even at a high rpm, in fact I had just started down the decent in a camp ground and just went form D to 3, to 2, to 1 stopping at each one and this happened. So it was an unusual problem at that, probably will never find out. Oh, if I was to pop one or all three of my driveshafts (univeral joints) I would have had to be droping into gear at a really high rpm. Maybe I can pull a wheelie. I knew I put on those wheels back there for some reason. All kidding aside, I remember doing that when I was a kid in my dads 49 Hudson and I did pop the driveshaft, twisted it actually, ah, those were the days.

By high RPM, I mean somewhat above idle. In our school buses, we run Allison tannys. And if you are above idle somewhat, they will not shift into gear until it returns to idle. But, this may not have been your case amd I hope it does not happen again.

Wow, wait a minute Bigdaddy, that is exactly what happened. I was just somewhat above idle. Downshifting going downhill even a bit there would have been no chance for the rpms even at a low rpm to return to idle, before I dropped it into 1st. The way you explained it makes perfect since now. I hope I don't have the problem again, but if I do I now have something to look for. Thank you.

YB,
From the best of my fuzzy recollection the limiter is to prevent the tranny from downshifting if you select a gear that will result in an over-rev (4800rpm I think) of the engine. Once the two match up it should shift as selected. Generally speaking I don't know too many folks who manually downshift to 1st for down hill braking. The only way the rpm could return to idle is if you shifted to Neutral and then to 1st or came to a stop. High RPM limit comes pretty quick in 1st.
