Rear Axle Lube

Several questions:

1. What is the maintenance schedule for drain/refill of differential?
2. What is the capacity for a W22?
3. What are some equivalents for Chevron Delo Gear ESI SAE 80W-90
(Workhorse recommended gear oil)?

Thanks for any input.

According to the WWC chassis guide the original lubricant is good for 250,000 miles.

This is a quote from the chassis guide:

"Beginning on July 10, 2000, chassis VIN number last eight digits Y3325061, synthetic gear lubricate became standard. The Dana 80/M80/S110/S130/S135 axles with the synthetic gear lubricate has a service interval as high as 250,000 miles if not contaminated or driving in dusty, sandy, or wet conditions areas. If lubricate becomes contaminated change immediately or if driving in the listed conditions change lubricate every 25,000 miles or 6 months."

Your W22 will have one of the axles named above. Probably a S110 or S130. The axle model number is stamped on the differential housing.

Our 2005 Dolphin on the W22 chassis has the Dana S150 rear axle . I went with Mobil 1 75W-140 full synthetic , it took 12 quarts .

So why would a W22 have a Dana S150 that take 12 qts
When our W24 "larger chassis" uses a Dana S130 and take about 7 qts

If you get your differential identification the Dana/Spicer web site has a list of approved lubricants.

Can't answer that one Kevin , I didn't built it , I just bought it and maintain it . Here is the data tag . Lower left corner says S150 . Im the second owner , may have been a special order or replaced after a failure ? The original owner didn't say and I only found it was a S150 when I replaced the fluid . From every thing I had read I was expecting a 110 or 130 to be under there .

So I called the Dana factory today to get some info on how our W24 with a "smaller differential" that only holds 7 qts can support more weight at 15,500 lbs than the Dana S150 on the W22 that holds 12 qts the Dana S150 looks so much bigger and stronger.

He told me size does not matter in this case... the Dana S150 is a older design. He told me the S130 is stronger by its design he said something about the walls being made thicker in the S130 than the S150

Good follow up Kevin , I was thinking like you that the 150 looked beefier than the 130 . I had watched your video on the forgotten fluid change and was surprised when I crawled under the rig and found a150 .
