Replacing air filter, is this a pre-filter that needs replacement too?

On my 8.1 the air filter box was duct taped shut and after I got the old filter out I found another filter. I am going to order a new filter but do I need this pre- filter too?

Thanks, Dave

If you're talking about the black foam filter, I threw it away on the advice of Oemy. Hasn't caused any problems for me, so far.

Thanks, I ordered a K&N. A little more expensive than others but suppose to be better air flow and is made of cotton so washable.

Dave, be careful using a K&N Filter, too much oil and the MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor will fail.

Thanks guys. I already installed the K&N filter. Will I get some warning if the Mass air flow sensor starts to fail? Got me a little concerned now. Dave

I installed the K&N and have had no MAF issues. I now have a more responsive throttle and better gas mileage. The K&N instructions are clear and the filter box seal that's included is an upgrade.

When I pulled the MAF I carefully cleaned it with MAF spray cleaner. Noticed a lot of crud.

Again the filter box now has a better seal then the factory seal so I'd say it counters the argument that the K&N is over oiled.

If your K&N filter is over oiled and it coats your MAF you should notice it!

P0150 and P0151 O2 sensor check engine light on mine was the result of a dirty MAF.

First thing the shop asked me when I took it in for repair was "Do you have a K&N air filter?"

I didn't have one but they said they've seen more than one coach with K&N causing MAF problems. Be very careful when you re-oil the K&N.
