has anyone used one of these to monitor many functions through the diagnostic port? i called scan guard and they state that on 9-11-07 they will be selling the newset version which will include the trans temp of a allison to the port and guage.
checked with allison and they say that the trans does send the temp info to the ECU and therefore should be picked up on the scan gauge, but he said that since the info is now being broadcast to another source of info it MAY not Will, cause problems with the trans..
i am under the impression that the diagnostic port is only a source of info, is it possible that a device like the scan gauge could cause a problem???
anyone using one and have any comments? thanks

I have used a guage from http://www.aeroforcetech.com/
for almost 1 year and I constantly monitor my transmission temp ( I also have the choice of 28 other paramaters on 1 of 2 lines).
It confirmed my oil press ure loss when the pump shaft failed and "saved" my motor. You only need to prlug it in an scroll throught the readouts untill you find the 2 that you wnat to monitor - or you can change it as you go along.
Hope this helps.

It is my understanding that the 2003 Allison supplies temp info to the OBD2 port only as a flag.
ie no output being ok and output meaning over temp. It is not linear with temp.

This may not be true for later then 2003.

My transmission temp readout is not a flag (w22 2003). it is a variable readout and varies by 1 degree (+ or -) at a time as does the coolant temp.

I wonder if a firmware upgrade is possible for those of us who recently purchased a ScanGauge?

From memory - 136.F to about 180.F. Coolant is 195F to 208.F.
The trans is slow to heat up - using synthetic fluid. The coolant temp varies a few degrees depending on climb etc.
The oil pressure varies depending on rpm.
It is nice to watch each function and know what the motor and transmission are doing. Cost was about $225.00 and it plugs into the port - no 12 volt plug needed.

Gregg, I know you asked JCM, but I'll add another few numbers. My "down the road #` are about what JCM's are, but Early July, while climbing I-70 from Grand Junction toward Denver, I was hammering my W 20 harder than I have EVER hammered anything, WOT for about 20 minutes.(and that covers a million miles in cars, trucks , Rv,s, and alot more in a/c, m/c's, and alot of other things with motors, and I saw 214 on the trannie. 215 on the H2O. OAT was near 100, traffic was light, and I was at about #25,000 gross.. Much as I was hating it, I was really impressed at the 8.1/Allison's ability to keep its cool, and "Keep On Truckin"...rgr...

ScanGaugeII Upgrade. I was on the phone this morning with a tec. at ScanGuageII. I wanted to know if anything was being done to enable the ScanGuageII to read transmission temps from the OBDII port.
I was told the ScanGuageII is now being tested with a new software upgrade that will allow the user to input an additional 25 readouts in addition to the 12 already there. Includes the trany temp if it's available at the OBD II port.

The tech. said they are hireing additional employees for this and hopefully this upgrade will be available to users in the next couple of weeks.

If you want your current ScanGuageII upgraded you will send it in and for $25.00 they will include the upgrade and return shipping. Their web-page should be updated soon to anounce this upgrade.

I hope the WH chassis provides the needed trans temp info to the OBD II.

Pat

Does the Scan Guard II have mounting abilities in the dash, like a bazel or trim, or do you have to set it on top of the dash or attach to the bottom of the dash? Thinking real hard of getting one soon. s/Toby

Toby. Check here. I mounted mine with the supplied Velcro so I could remove it.
