Why do I get a whiff of rubber burning after a moderate to hard stop. I get no smell after a slow stop.

There is no doubt that you will get some type of odor from the brakes under those conditions but the odor should quickly dissipate as soon as the rotors and pads cool down.
One technique that will keep your brakes from overheating is to use compression braking whenever you can and if you do need to use the brakes that you apply them intermittently in a jabbing method. Staying on the brakes on a descent alone will ruin your rotors and that would not be covered under warranty.
There was a recall on the Bosch ZOPS brake components for early 2003 models. I am thinking that you either have had your VIN number checked to see if you fell in the range or that like me you're out of the range and have ZOHT brakes.

I had a smell in mine after an emergency stop, turn out my wife soiled herself!!! Just kidding, good thing she does not read this.
No smell of braking ever, on long grades I let the drive train to the work.

DriVer
Mine is on the recall list. I have not had time to get the job done since I have been traveling the country all year. I do have an appointment for October though. Hopefully the new brakes will not smell.

You should be fine after your appointment. Please let us know how your service experience turned out and the performance of your brakes after the service.
