It has been an eventful trip so far. First the tranny fails, now the engine would not start. I have lights, all the indicators on the dash work, the battery cables and connections are OK. So, I have the wife turn the key to On postion and I tap the starter with a hammer and the engine crancks right up.

My question is this: Is the starter and solenoid two separate items that can be replaced individually and are they Workhorse proprietary parts or can I buy them at Chevy dealer or can I buy them at NAPA? We'll be heading back to Tennessee after the Daytona 500 and I would like to get it fixed. Thanks!

Bob

Bob, not sure about solenoid availability for your starter. The starter however, is not Workhorse propietary, I know it is available at NAPA (2446876) remanufactured, and is probably available at other parts stores. If you think problem is solenoid, ask NAPA about availability.

Possible problems include

Starter
Starter solenoid (If it's mounted on starter an GM's usually are)
Starter drive gear
Engine Ring Gear

Just so you know

And the last two can damage each other

I recently reworked my starter and solenoid connections after a no start condition. The solenoid connections were bad, being very rusty. Go easy during nut removal so that you don't shear the studs off!! Good luck!!

CoastieSCPO,

You've got the exact same symptoms as I had-- bad solenoid. Go to a starter/alternate rebuild shop and buy one from them. The 5.7 and the 8.1 use the same solenoid. Oemy gave you the link to my original thread.

Good luck,
