I can't recall if the 4L85 transmission has a magnetic drain plug or not. I don't believe the 8.1 V8 engine oil plug is magnetc but I thought the GM (non-allison) was. Anyone rememner?

Didn't spend a lot of research on this one, but I do recall under the topic "Fumoto" oil change plugs that yes, the 8.1 oil pan has an OEM magnetic plug. There was some discussion about loosing that capability when the stock plug was replaced by the Fumoto quick drain plug. I changed mine. Can't help ya with the Allison tranny pan plug though...

I haven't been inside a 4L85-E tranny (yet), but practically all Hydramatics have a flat, square or flat, round magnet in the pan, not on the drain plug. I just yesterday replaced the filter and drain plug on a 4L60-E in an '01 Silverado. No magnet on the plug, but there was the ever present magnet in the pan.

It's been a while since I changed the oil in my 8100, so I don't remember if the oil drain plug is magnetic.
